CLS550 insurance cost
I am trying to gauge how much one should pay to insure a 2014 CLS550. I know your mileage might vary but I am just trying to get a general idea. I garage my car in Boston, MA, my insurance went from $1100 to $1800 switching from a 2015 BMW 535i to my current 2014 CLS550. I know the CLS550's original MSRP is about $15000 higher but the insurance rate went up over 50%. I bought the CLS used, I paid about the same for both cars. Is the CLS550 on some sort of high risk insurance list? Maybe it is the horsepower that puts the CLS550 into another category? I am hoping someone here might be able to shed some light on the subject. Thank you.

2016 CLS550
All I can do is share how much I pay (for comparison purposes)
I am in South Florida, I have a 2016 CLS550, and I use Progressive Insurance.
I am paying $617.00 every 6 months.
Perhaps it helps that my wife and I have two other vehicles on the policy (thus a total of 3 vehicles). Multi-vehicles on a policy usually get a discount.
Perhaps you can get quotes from other companies?

The CLS550 is considered more of a performance car especially with the TTV8 with well over 400 HP vs. the 6 cylinder / 300 HP in the 535.

I researched this before buying my current E550 coupe for comparison purposes. Both the E550 and the CLS550 are roughly the same from insurance cost perspective assuming identical vehicle configurations. The quotes I received varied from $1,400 to $1,500 on an annual basis. That's here in the New Jersey market. Not out of line for where these cars fit in the luxury performance niche.

Don't forget your zip code has a lot to do with your insurance premiums. I'm paying a little over $100 per month for my my cls550. I haven't did the math because I have two cars with geico and I'm paying something like $852 for both cars every 6 months. I only have liability on my other car.

I have rather high insurance liability limits. 250/500 liability, 250 pip, and 100k property damage. And comp/ collision of course. I live in central NJ. I too went from a 2011 BMW 535i - meh car with nicer tech, to a 2013 cls550 tt. Performance wise their is no comparison, you had to drive the BMW like you were mad at it to get any kind of appreciable performance out of it.
My insurance went from 1440 on the BMW to over 2000 on the CLS, BUT then I shopped the rate and got it down to 1600 a year with Geico. Kind of ridic but I guess you have to pay to play.
Take care,
George

I agree about the performance, its night and day. What the 535i work very hard to do, the CLS550 does it with ease.

I went from a Cadillac XTS to my CLS400 and the rate went down on my policy. I even called and ask the lady why, she couldn't tell me. I have 100/300/100 with Geico, $500 ded and pay $1174 for the CLS total for both cars is $1704 yearly.

Excluding the driver's history of claims submitted, most of the insurance companies seem to focus on brand, horsepower, anticipated repair costs and vehicle theft reports in a given geographic area for the particular model. While the vehicle being designated a coupe may be a small factor, anticipating a certain driving style from owners of coupes (more aggressive and thus more prone to potential claims) versus typical sedans, I can't see it being a prime driver of insurance costs in this class of vehicle. Maybe a member of this forum, who is an active insurance agent or broker, can chime in on this topic.

The E-class seems to be much cheaper to insure, even the E63 AMG is cheaper to insure than the CLS550. The E63 AMG is not on the insurance company's list of high risk car, but I would think with the horsepower of the E63 AMG, it should cost a bit more than that to insure. I believe the list is based on the statistics of insurance claims for each vehicles. I guess the owners of the E63 AMG do not make as many insurance claims as the owners of the CLS550.

I think the biggest culprit here is the rarity of the 12+ CLS.
Looking at my premium breakdown, collision and comprehensive make up a bigger portion of the premium than liability. Transposing that it seems the insurance company sees a bigger risk (as far as a potential payout) in the event that my car is somehow damaged or totaled, rather than any injury or damage to another vehicle I may cause as part of any said event. Granted I have a spotless driving record, but I think the culprit here is the lack of aftermarket parts availability.
90% of the E class parts are either available used (i.e. salvage yard) or aftermarket reproduction. Chinese / Taiwan body panels, headlights, grilles etc. None of this seems to be available for the CLS in terms of crash parts. SO they know that if someone cracks up a CLS they will be paying MB parts counter prices for every little bit that needs replacement.
Hence they bang us with super high collision / comprehensive rates.

I just got a quote from Amica, it was only $50 cheaper than my current insurance company. I really do not want to start using discount auto insurance companies. My current insurance company use OEM part only.

I'd rather pay the $50 for peace of mind. Have you contacted your current company and let them know that you're shopping other companies and found something cheaper. Maybe they can match or come close.

I currently work in the insurance industry and many factors go into your premium. It also depends on the company you go with. Higher deductibles will lower your premium. and also depends what coverage limits you have. For a cls I would preferably stick to 250k/500k split limit. The year of the car is crucial as well. the older the car , it usually is cheaper to insure because of the cost for parts. Another important factor is you. Your driving record such as speeding tickets, accidents and your age. If you are under 25 your insurance will be higher. If you are over 25 you are in a less adverse group because teens are more likely to get in accidents based off of empirical data. Also being married saves you a bit of money because again based on data married couples are more responsible. And another big one is the ability of the car. The faster the car can go the more damage it can cost. Hence why faster cars are more expensive to insure. A lot of you hit on all the key points. If you have any insurance questions just let me know. Always happy to help.

Just picked up a 2013 a few days ago and I am currently going through insurance shock myself. I have been driving for over 15 years and have had no accidents or tickets in the last 7 years. This car is very expensive to insure!

My 2014 CLS550 costs $706 every 6months. So basically $1400 a year. This is the 4th car on my policy and all 4 vehicles have full coverage. I have state farm but will quote out a few others just to keep them honest. For all 4 cars I will be paying $4600 a year.

Living on the Oregon coast insurance for my E350 is $390 for 6 months. An E550 quote was $450, and a CLS550 was $546. When I asked my former insurance agent to check the rating symbols for the E550,and CLS550 he said the CLS was rated 71, and 73 on a scale of 1 to 75, and the E was about 5 points lower.

I have to pay around 220 a month but I am an international discount, since I am an international student. When I first got to the states I was confused and scared and honestly it was hard to understand how the whole system worked. Was my license enough, what extra papers I needed, how to get that insurance. It was expensive for me since I am on a scholarship and can't really work extra. So I started to look around the web to find some discounts and options. I found a really good article that helped me understand what I needed to get this discount (you can check it here: https://www.cheapautoinsurance.com/a...ional-students) which allows me to have my vehicle insured

Paying about $100/mo for full coverage with Geico in New York, multi car discount and long history. Zero accidents and/or tickets.
