Can the 7g Tronic handle a tune?

Hey guys, so I have been looking to get a tune for my cls550, however every time I'm about to pull the trigger, my hesitation about the transmission keeps me from doing so. The 7g transmission can hold up to 516 FT of TQ safely, however almost all the tunes are putting out almost 700 TQ, can the transmission handle this type of power in the long run?

I did both my CLS550 and MY Edition 1 S550 from OE Tuning down in Orange county. No troubles at all but let me warn you, if you get on it in the slightest, your rear end will pop our from under you. The factory under tuned the CLS but the tune is a bit much. I'm finding that I use the E instead of the S mode because it's just to damn fast. Already blew through a tire in 5K miles. Hasn't affected the trans at all.

Appreciate the thorough response! Did you get dyno tunes for both, or was it a "canned tune"?

I am guessing they tune it depending on the application. All I can say is, if it gets any more powerful, I couldn't keep the wheels on the ground. They also did my CL600 and I turned off the tracking control just once. That was lesson learned. I barely touched the pedal and I ended up going in the opposite direction. NEVER again. You will be very happy with the tune. The factory restrictions make the car anemic. The tune brings it past what it needs to be but very nice esp if your cruising down the freeway. I suggest them for any tune.

Yea I was also looking at Weistec Tune which offers 540hp and 700tq. I've also come across same questions if the trans will handle and not break into pieces lol
Had you guys have to make any other changes/modifications for any other parts after the tune?

My tune is a bit more aggressive. I'm not getting on it unless some wise *** try's to think he can out run me them, I'm on it but to just smoke tires and treat my baby like its a Honda, NOT gonna happen. No troubles and I would think it can handle what is thrown at it, as long as you don't abuse the power. I'm sure you can ruin any transmission if you rip into it enough. As for stock, it has been way to detuned. Wake it up, you will love the difference and my fuel economy is insane or REGULAR fuel I'm getting upwards of 32-34 on the freeway going 80 and in stop and go traffic. The average miles are displayed but the Distronic was set on 80 the entire trip. I included my Edition ! S Coupe fuel economy after the tune as well.

Oh yea, of course. Abusing the car with a tune like every single minute is going to put pressure on the engine/trans. But the question is, would the trans blow up? Lol. I also floor it here and there just to mess around with folks with SS and GT for a quick minute and I'm back to cruising.

But one thing I don't get. RennTech vs Weistec. $2740 and $1500, respectively. The gains are the same. 540hp both, but 715 tq with Weistec and 705tq from RennTech. How and what justifies the price of RennTech being $1200+ more expensive than Weistec? Couple 100s would be understandable that one company might be more reputable than the other, but $1240 more? Am I missing something here? Renntech provides with something more?

I use OETuning in Orange County Ca. I wait for their sales and spend a fraction of what you’re thinking about spending. They are all the same. They actually can only tune a car so much without throwing it out of its ability to run properly. While I was waiting for my computer to be ready, I had an extensive talk with one of the techs. He mentioned that they are all the same tunes, it’s just how much you’re willing to spend. They promised 125 additional hp to the wheels and about 725 in torque. These engines are all the same and are tuned depending on application. They get the peak performance out of each computer to maximize the best runability. I wouldn’t spend Rentech money because it is the same as all the rest. It’s all in programming. These guys know what they are doing and it’s a 500%-2500% mark up. It’s just which sucker is will to pay the most. Iv’e done 6 from EuroTune and will continue to do so, as long as they keep giving me the special pricing. They turned my CL600 into a full on rocket ship. You think the Bi Turbo V8 is fast just try a tuned 600. It’s like trying to race a Chevette against a corvette . Wait until OETuning has a special and use them. It will be the best smal bit of money you will ever spend. Or you can spend stupid money and get the same results.

DO you mean EuroCharged? I did not find any manufacturer named EuroTune.

EuroCharged, too, charges 2k for gains peaking at 530hp and 606tq.
Weistec charges 1500 for 540hp and 702tq
RennTech charges 2700 for 540hp and 702 tq.

Looking at those numbers, Weistec offers more/same for less. I'm going to wait out on it for a few more months before I go for it, or whenever they have some sort of sale on these things.

You get discounts because you get quite a few things done from them. Me, just one and done lol. I wouldn't be getting a penny discount on anything.

I wouldn’t pick a tune just based on who has the lowest price for the biggest advertised gains. That’s asking for trouble in my view... It encourages vendors to either inflate their performance gain figures or make compromises to the tune to get those numbers on a dino run that could spell trouble for you in terms of drivability and/or reliability.

I actually want a tune that is going to “wake up” my car, not push the limits too far.

Eurocharged seems to offer very reasonable gains for a middle of the road price and has a pretty good reputation from what I can see.

BTW, to answer the OPs question, I believe the 7G-Tronic in the CLS is the same tranny used in many AMG cars that come with tuner like performance from the factory.

I would be be a bit more concerned about the newer 9G-Tronic like I have, that I’m not sure comes factory equipped in any AMG vehicles.

I picked OETUNING at first because of their sale price. I kept with them because of the customer service, the quick turn around time and their ability to make my cars stupid fast. You can do whatever you like, pay whatever you want. As far as I’m concerned, I get more than I pay for. My CLS is stupid crazy fast and my fuel economy is amazing. Best of luck with your tuning.

Cool. Did you send in your ECU for tuning or did you get one of the new OBD2 tuning devices?

The first 4, I mailed them. It was literally done in hours and mailed back the same day. The S Class I picked up in Beverly Hills and on the way home stopped off and they did it while I waited. It’s quite complicated but they do great work!

They sell an OBD2 tune now too so you don’t have to remove anything

You pay an extra $220 and you get the tune and tool to upload it yourself. It means that you have no downtime when you order your tune and you can change it back to stock whenever you need to.

Thanks for the link. Do you know if the dyno numbers for torque from that link are in Nm or in lb-ft? OE tuning looks like a good option for the price but if their numbers are in Nm, their tune is over 170 lb-ft less than Renntech or Weistec. If their numbers are shown in lb-ft, it's showing 484 lb-ft torque at 3200rpm in stock form. I know Mercedes understates power on these cars but I doubt it has 484 lb-ft torque to the wheel in stock form. Can anyone clarify the numbers on the OE tune dyno graph?

I would personally go for a well known company for your tune. As someone who has a past of tuning cars, there is much more to a tune then just making power...it is about making power that is SAFE for the motor with No detonation.

2013 Weistec 540/715 tuned CLS 550, 2008 E350, and '07 Jaguar S-Type R
My '13 has had a Weistec 540/715 tune for around 10K miles and everything has held up beautifully, but I don't abuse it.

The tune gives you better MPG?? How is that possible?
