2016 CLS550 Aftermarket Wheels

I purchased a new set of aftermarket rims (IPW 5 twin spoke) for my 2016 CLS550 4matic with the AMG sport package several years ago and just got around to mounting them. They have an offset of 35 (Mercedes say their rims have an offset of 34.5) and they do not fit. The spokes contact the edge of the AMG caliper. The caliper scored one spoke less than 1mm by my measurement. The company I bought the wheels from say they DO NOT accept returns (regardless that they don't fit the car) and I should use a 3mm wheel spacer. The shop that mounted and installed the rims claimed that wheel spacers are a big No No as they adversely affect the handling, etc. I've since Googled Wheel spacers and I've seen some people that say Yes, some say No, and others that say Maybe! Needless to say, I'm confused. I would take it to my local Mercedes dealer but after several problems with the car in the past that they've not been able to diagnose I have Zero confidence in anything they say.

Has anyone had this problem with aftermarket rims? Does anyone have a solution that worked? I was thinking that maybe a 1mm or 2mm spacer would be enough since the Factory rims only have an offset of 34.5mm vs the 35mm that aftermarket rims have? Would adding a 3mm spacer be a problem?

If I add the spacer will I have to get new, longer, bolts?

Any and all input would be helpful.

TIA,
Joe

Hi Joe.

I did have the same problem on my car also in front as you have. CLS550 calibers go wider out than CLS63 AMG calibers. Even CLS63 original front wheels don't fit to my car. I have now light weight Vertini RF1.3 rims on my car.

I didn't want to go for spacers and what I did was a grind some stuff off from front brake caliber. Its really easy to do and no-one can't notice that.

I spoke with the wheel manufacturer when i purchased new wheels and got them to confirm and guarantee fitment in conjunction with the wheel shop who was going to fit the wheels. Another shop I tried got the fitment of the front wheels wrong 3 times and on the final attempt suggested machining material from the back of the wheel "spokes" or taking material off the caliper.
NO THANKS. Both alter the integrity and strength of the part. Machined material from the back of the wheel would void all and any Standards the wheel has to meet to be considered suitable for road use, and as a result deem the vehicle uninsured in the event of an accident.

I got the right wheels, that fit perfectly.

For my 2014 CLS500 the front was 20x9 + 28 and the rear 20x10 +35. I sure this varies from wheel to wheel depending on the design and manufacturer.

Good luck.

Question 2 wheel spacers or 4?

If I have to add wheel spacers for my front wheels do I need to add the same width spacer on the rear wheels?

TIA
