Front Lighter Port Issue and other small issues

I have a 2012 CLS 550. After purchasing the car and meddling around I discovered the front lighter was stuck in the "in" position. Meaning the lighter was depressed all the way into the socket. I did some reading and learned it was probably just the fuse. Today I replaced the fuse and sure enough the lighter is working. One thing I did learn during this DIY was there is a light ring around the lighter port that is supposed to illuminate. I don't know if it supposed to be on all the time or just while the port is in use? Either way I have no light around the port. Is there a simpel fix for this?
I have found a couple of what I thought would be small issues I might be able to fix so I decided to move onto the second issue. My trunk release on the drivers side door and at the remote will release the trunk(boot). However when I press the remote or pull the lever from the door the trunk does not automatically close. I did some research on this as well and it turns out the problem is probably a broken or worn wire. My biggest problem is accessing the left side of the trunk to trace the wire . I worked for nearly an hour popping out pegs, unscrewing tie-downs, and removing the lower the lower inside hard plastic trim piece that covers the latch assembly unit only to find I still could not get the cover off. Upon closer inspection I noticed two pegs I missed. By this point I decided to stop because I did not want to break something in my frustration. My question is: Is there an easier way to access the left side of the trunk without having to remove the shroud cover? TIA.
One last thing. While I had the trunk exposed I noticed down in the wheel well to the left of the tire there is an open space clearly something was meant to be installed or mounted in this area. Does anyone know what it supposed to be here?

YOu can see on the left side this open space is clearly meant to have something installed. There appears to be molded metal brackets that are part of the trunk bottom so something can be aligned and sit down in this area.
