Alignment

I had an axle replaced a couple months ago by what I thought was a reputable indy shop but when I got the car back it was floating right quite a bit. I didn't trust to take it back to them for several reasons so took it to the dealer who apparently performed an alignment. I didn't feel a difference so I took it back a couple weeks later. They had me wait 2 hours and told me their tech drove it on their "alignment road" and didn't feel it was an issue and blamed it on crowned roads.

I get in the car and drive home and steering feels tighter and while the car is still going left slightly, it feels about 80% better.

Is a tighter steering wheel common with tightening of alignment parts? Can't figure the reason the dealer did work on it to correct an issue but didn't tell me about it (aside from them not wanting to admit they either didn't do anything the first time or that they didn't do it right)?
