Vibrating transmission maybe?
07 cls550. Recently noticing a vibration/shudder just before gears shift. The whole cruising flat on the freeway at 60mph or higher I can hear and feel a slight whirring noise. If I down shift with the paddles from 7th to 6 the engine runs increase of course but the sound gets about 50 percent quieter. If I go down another gear from 6 to 5 the noise is almost gone and the car feels smooth. Mind you this is all while doing 70mph on the freeway. So I'm assuming it's not engine noise since it should get louder and more vibration as the rpms increase. oddly if then shift into neutral while doing 70mph thennoise and vibration instantly come back as if in 7th gear only about 2 times louder and twice as much vibration.
SO in leaning towards transmission noise. Coincidentally when this all started at the same time when I first started the car after sitting for over an hour the motor sounds extremely throaty. It runs a little rough and sounds really deep and throaty. Like a dodge Challenger with and exhaust. Once the car has been driven 20 minutes or so the motor goes back to being quiet and smooth. No loss of power when sounding throaty and running a little more rough.
No check engine lights. No stored codes. I'm thinking of getting the transmission serviced which I really want to do myself as I do my other vehicles but this thing sits really low to the ground and I've never messed with non dipstick transmission. But I don't want to pay a shop to service it if that's not the problem. Shops I've used I the past have about a 60/40 figure out the problem ratio which doesn't make me happy.
Any opinions or thoughts?
The vibration and noise increasing while in neutral coasting at 70 really makes me lean towards transmission but I'd also assume it would get quieter then than while in gear. Unless maybe a bearing at the front of the trans. But then why only noisy and vibrating above 60mph.......
