Laser Diffusers

has anyone installed a laser diffuser on thier cars? do they really work? what's the best system out there?

i currently have a V1, but have recently gotten 2 tickets by cops using laser.

Custom Car Stereo has a kit which they sell for $1600 installed which gives you a built in radar system plus a laser diffuser. I think it's a K40, but i don't remember...please advise...TIA.

I had the K-40 put in mine and a) it is so stealth that you can't even see where they've installed it and b) K-40 folks will pay for your ticket if you were ticketed based on radar....love mine.

Haven't you guys seen the episode of Mythbusters where the tryed all kinds of methods to defeat laser gun measure. Nothing they did made any difference including LEDs and special coatings.

Very interesting...there are a wide variety of views on this subject (see below for a sampling)...I do find it interesting that they're actually banned in some parts of the world, so if it's universally accepted that they don't do squat, why would cops care?

In either case, this is a great website for finding out more on jammers and the like:

http://www.radardetector.net/

Laser Jammers
The next test was of laser jammers. These work by detecting the pulse of laser light and responding to it with another pulse back at the gun that is designed to trigger an error message on the laser gun and thus cause it not to record the speed. These devices are legal in the USA but may not be in the UK or elsewhere due to DTI laws. As none of our laser tests were on the public road it did not cause us an issue. We had two types of laser jammer fitted to two identical cars. We drove them at the laser guns - starting about 1 mile away. Initially we forgot to tell the police that we had jammers fitted and they were confused as to why they could not get a reading - initially thinking that their laser guns were all faulty. This seemed to indicate that however the jammmers disabled the guns, it did not result in a warning to them that they were being jammed. Once they were aware of the jammers we carried on with the tests. As the laser guns can be used up to 999m we started at long range. Both of the jammers essentially do the same thing - they send out a pulse that disables the gun and warns you at the same time. The Defensor K40 jammer was able to easily jam the LTI20.20 but was not as successful against the Prolaser gun. The LTI gun sends out a very short pulse (about 4/100th second) where as the Prolaser gun emits a much longer pulse. The Target LE850 jammer was successful against both types of gun and effectively disabled them for around 5 seconds. When the LE850 detects the laser gun it emits a series of beeps and then jams. In tests, if you were traveling at 90mph when targeted with a laser gun you could start braking and be doing under 20mph before the laser gun is able to register your speed. The LE850 jammed successfully every time we tried it, but in other tests we’ve seen, it had about a 90% success rate - so it is not total protection. In tests the device was not hidden on the car but even then the police could not see it until it was pointed out to them. It is small and black and could easily be fitted to cars or motor cycles. We understand that at least one UK police force has a device for detecting laser jammers. The police tell us that it would be a case of "perverting the course of justice" if caught with one operating on the road. As far as we know no one has yet been to court for having one - to have this proved. We have taken legal advice on the legality of laser jammers and our Barrister was unable to find any laws that made jammers illegal. That's not to say that you could not be prosecuted as the police could always try and use an unrelated law to try a prosecution - as they used to do with radar detectors. In the USA they are legal and it was only recently that radar detectors became legal in the UK after a test case. Both jammers were fitted to the front of the test cars as 90% of laser gun usage is at the front of vehicles. With the LE850 you could fit a second unit on the rear for all round protection.

Jammers - Summary
The LE850 is the best jammer tested as it works against the two main types of police laser gun. It will give you around 5 seconds to correct your speed; legal in the USA, but may not be legal in the UK. Radar jammers exist but we did not get around to trying them as handheld radar is in decline and a good detector should be enough warning against GATSOs or handheld units.

FAST Car & the SLD920 Laser Diffuser The following contains extracts from the original copy supplied to Fast car magazine November 2000 issue, on electronic counter - measures by Adam Rayner, Fast car magazine's ICE editor. Only the rude words have been altered...

In my youth, I had real problems. I would hurry everywhere, convinced I would miss something if I didn't just get there quicker than that. However fast 'that' was, it wasn't quick enough. I became expert at getting stopped for speeding and indeed was banned three times in total, only ever for speeding totting-ups. I acquired a real interest in the radar detector, having been 'blunderbussed' by radar guns more times than I'd like to even admit. When laser came along, we spent huge money at one magazine, rented some laser guns and borrowed a slew of detectors. Only two detectors could see the laser gun. At the time I said something along the lines of the laser gun being more deadly than an Armalite, without windage or elevation worries when aiming. Two years on, and I learned of this electronic counter measure, a device that could give you a second chance to pay attention and slow down if caught going too quickly at a laser speed trap zone, and immediately we were to borrow both Kustom Signals and Riegl (USA/Austria) police laser weapons. Well, technology has come on apace. Not only did all the radar and laser detectors show evidence that they can all save your bacon in a speed trap situation, but the SLD920 Astounded me. A simple-looking device, the box it comes in contains two small items, about the size of half a cigarette packet and some wiring. There's a tiny micro-switch big enough to use but small enough to conceal and a tiny beeper unit. The red-lensed sensor-diffuser array units go behind the car's grille, looking up the road, preferably unobstructed by bars directly in front of them.

I drove the SLD920-equipped BMW 318iS used for the test at any speed I chose, to where either laser gun was shooting me from. I could detect the laser guns from well beyond visible range of the speed trap and I decided what speed the guns would get me at by switching off the device! it was amazing. It works. The only proviso I would add in my maturity (!) is that this isn't about a licence to speed. Do be careful: Detect, slow down, switch off. Like mirror, signal, manoeuvre. I Know I want one so bad I can taste it..........

Here's how the copy was sent to the magazine, less the rude expletives we tend to use... 'In the midst of these Radar and Laser detectors is a p***- smelling black ram amongst the ewes. Called a 'laser diffuser' it is apparently able to cloak you in a shield of laser-proof invisibility. The laser gun shoots you, the result is simply not recorded by the gun. Want to Know more? we fappin' did too...." Snooper SLD920 (laser diffuser) £294.95 Put simply, I'm under oath to my sources not to reveal exactly what or how this does what it does. So, does the diffuser stop laser guns from seeing you?

Is it stealth bomber command time? yes, it turns the laser guns to s***. I love it to death and I want one. RATINGS SENSITIVITY - RADAR n/a This isn't a detector, it's a klingon cloaking device. SENSITIVITY - LASER 5 This deserves a six, or a ten. It beat the lot on laser detection. FALSE SIGNAL CONTROL 5 It only sees lasers and it sees them all. GATSO DETECTION n/a Nil, you will need to have a radar detector on board as well. LOOKS 5 Meant to be hidden under your grille, the bits' lenses look evil. OVERALL PERFECT SCORE A fappin' wonder-product! And from the conclusion... "The Snooper SLD920 diffuser is a new product. It works. Buy one. They normally only shoot you in the face with laser. So a rear pointing diffuser array is less than vital, although we have heard of a punter who has fitted two sets." It's quite simple, really.........

LE 850 Field Test with South Yorkshire Police, Manchester Police and Motorcycle news:
(Courtesy of UKSpeedtraps.co.uk)

We tested it with a ProLaser II and a LTI 20-20 with Video camera mounted on it, testing was done on a Kawasaki Ninja and a Mitsubishi Shogun. The ProLaser was used on the bike by Sheffield Police and Manchester Police tested the car.

Both forces were sceptical and said it would not work, however they were wrong. They could not get a reading from the Kawasaki Ninja and neither could they get a reading from the Mitsubishi Shogun before the drivers had slowed down. One police officer was so impressed, he said would get one for his bike....!

We did several runs and they tried very hard but to no avail.

On the bike it was linked into the Bel 966R and gave a clear warning. In the car the control box went mad with a whopping 87 dB audible warning. 7 seconds may not sound much, but believe me you have plenty of time to slow, and once its shuts down automatically the officer starts to get readings again of your vehicle at the correct speed, this helped to remove some suspicion as you approach.
