2009 NAV

I was playing with the 2009 NAV and to my surprise I think it's WORSE than the older NAV! Anyone got the chance to compare the old and new nav? I tried zooming in to the max on the new one and it didn't even show the names of a lot of the big streets. On the old one if you move the arrow to any street it will actually tells you the street name but not the new one?!

That's a first I've heard, I think the new Nav is far superior to the older one. Voice control is much improved as is destination entry along with all the other features of the 2009 system. This alone has made me wait for the 2009 MY CLS550.

Did you go try it out yourself? I think the map display looks a lot better but it also has a lot less detail in terms of street names compare to the old one. I only spent 10 mins or so playing around with it so I could be wrong.

Yes I did use it myself, I went and too the car for a drive as I am getting an 09 CLS or E. I guess I didn't look at the streets in the nav that closely, I will check that next time. Overall though, I think the system is far improved and actually what a Mercedes caliber nav system should be.

Ya, when I first looked at it I thought it's a lot nicer especially the way they display the map, then I proceeded to play around with the nav and that's when I found that out. Anyways, the 2009 is still an updated version so it should be better overall. Good luck with your purchase and post some pics when you get it.

Hi Mbenz1. I think it's difficult to ben worse than the old Nav....
I have a full Comand (TV,DVD,Radio,MP3,phone and Nav) on my CLS with release 5.0 Nav and I find it slow (sometimes the corner has gone when it says to turn), with poor coverage (many systems that you can buy with 300 Euro have a better knowledge of the territory) and speaking a strange language (in Italian probably some skilful Chinese guys literaly translated the English phrases in a way that is absolutely not Italian and above all without meaning ). Too much time wasted to say 'please' here 'please' there ('bitte' in German , 'Prego' in Italian). In some circumstacies with 'please' the job has already gone. In 2002 I bought a aftermarket German VDO Nav system. 10 times better in every feature, even if so old. A common 'Never lost' on Hertz cars in USA is much better.... Bah!

European Delivery I received a notice from MB that the Command Navigation: The European Navigation for MY09 S, E, CLS, SLK, SL and C-Classes will not be available until further notice. The Delivery Center will provide a European Road Map to customers that have the Navigation System in their vehicle. I don't know if this a software problem or problems with the previous users not returning the software when the vehicle was left off at the Drop-Off Point.

This no joke. This is the message "The European Navigation for MY09, S, E, CLS, SLK, SL and C-Classes will not be available until further notice. The Delivery Center will provide a European Road Map to customers that have the Navigation System in their vehicle." I do not know if there is a problem with the return of the software to the Drop-Off Point or a conflict when the US version is added.

Is there any place to rent a GPS or rent a European Disc for the period we will be in Europe?

In Europe you can find portable Mio, Garmin , TOMTOM , Panasonic and other brands starting from 99 Euros up to 300 Euros. I don't know their perfomance. More expensive devices (500Euros) with Tv from VDO,Magellan and other. Best prices in supermarkets , as usual.

I am only going to be in Europe for a few days. I could rent a European GPS the the US. I prefer to rent one in Europe and return it in Europe. There are some rental places in the UK but I have been able to find one in Germany.

This is mostly likely because the 2009 cars have hard drive based navigation. The previous model years have a DVD nav system. So in the past they could just lend you a Euro DVD for the COMAND, but now they would have to wipe the entire hard drive to put on Euro map data.

I will rent a GPS if available from one of the local companies with a different drop off point or I will have to reply on mappy.com or viamichelin.com.

You are correct the European version is not compatible with the US version. MB has revised their information about the NAV. MB will be lending the European Delivery Customer a portable GPS.
