Octane question.

Can you get away with using 87 or 89 octane in these cars? Do they have knock sensors that readjust the timing? I stuck 89 in my CLS500 the other day and everything seem to be fine. This is a daily driver and I don't hot rod the car. What is your knowledge of this? Safe or not safe? Not sure what the compression ratio of a 2006 cls?

My apologies, but I did a search and could not find anything on it. Any suggestions what I should put down in my search? Not sure what the acronyms mean you posted.
