CLS 500 Sticky lifters

The noise started the morning after a long drive(about 600 mi.). It sounded like there was no oil. The oil level was down a litre so one was added. The noise only happens on cold starts, lasts for about 2 to 3 min until the engine warms up. I'm sure it is the lifters. I was told to change the the oil and to put in 7 litres of 5w-40 and 1 litre of lucas oil additive. It still makes a racket on cold starts but quiets after the engine is warm. My question, is there any damage being done.? Is there any other simple solution short of changing the lifters? If they have to be changed, what kind of money are we talking about? The car only has 65,000 km on it and to me this is not normal operation. Could there be a problem with the oil pump? I would appreciate any suggestions because the car is a dream to drive but this noise drives me nuts!

Hydraulic lifters in modern cars get 'pumped up' by oil pressure, to fill the gap between the cam/valve or rocker/pushrod.

Sounds to me like yours are leaking out overnight and have to get filled up again. Are you using a very thin oil? How many miles on the engine? (Better not be less than 150k)

I'm using 5W-40 and the engine has 41,000 mi. on it. Once it's warmed up (2-3 min.) it is fine, it purrs like a kitten. But this isn't normal, it should be quiet from the start warm or cold!

Yup, very thin oil. Try straight 30 weight and see if it reduces substantially. This is Summer, and depending where you are you may could use 40 weight with STP. This will tell you if your lifters are leaky... eh, which would be very disappointing.

Has the engine ever drastically overheated? Can you count how many may be clacking? If only one, may just be mfg defect.
