CLS550 Mercedes 150 point inspection worth it?

I'm about to pick up a 2007 CLS550 for a good price. It's from a reputable dealership that mainly sells Ferrari's. They have a good reputation for selling good quality cars. However, I'm still paranoid about buying an older car with 0 warranty. The car has ~90,000km's (54,000 miles).
I've called Mercedes and they want $150 for a certification which I understand is the 150 point inspection they also do with all the star certified vehicles. Is this just a typical safety check that I can easily do myself? I'm mechanically inclined, I just want Mercedes to give the car a proper check. Is this worth it or should I just bite the bullet?
Also, any problems I should be aware of from this year/model? My friend who has an '09 CLS just tells me that on his car it has some improvements over the '07 like bigger brakes, the steering wheel and navi is better. That's about it. Anything else? The one I'm eyeing has the AMG sports package.
thanks,
Bryan
