I never understood those types of auctions. You pay 15K just to take over the man's spot in line on that car and then pay full MSRP or whatever for the actual car?

that's exactly what's being done...it's been going on for quite some time now. anytime something new is coming out, the first few folks on the list can really make a killing on it. just goes to show that there are plenty of folks out there that desire the car and just can't wait a few months to get one.

let's hope someone doesn't go to the dealer and pay them off. then this guy who just spent $15k for the order won't get ****. my uncle was one of the first in NY to have the current CL500 by talking to his dealer. they already had an offer of $10k to bump the original buyer off the list and my uncle went higher. only thing was that he had to take the european delivery then the car becomes claimed before it hits the states and no one can do anything about it. plus it had a couple thousand miles on it from driving around europe.

Mmmmm, it seems that there's something wrong here. If that guys is really selling a first delivery car, then the car should be available for immediate delivery on January 17th, 2005, which is the official launch date! Maybe even a week late at most so that the dealer who is selling it to him has time to show it off to potential customers but that's about it. However, if the car is coming in February, it's certainly NOT a first delivery car!

P.S. The market value on the CLS 500 is not $15k over the MSRP, is more like $4k over the MSRP if it's coming from an independent dealer or MSRP if it's coming from an honest and fair authorized Mercedes dealer.

I agree with you Ricky that dealer mark ups by authorized Mercedes dealerships suck and it's gay. However, what would you do when all the few Mercedes dealers that sell at MSRP in the USA have a waiting list of 2 years for a car you want? Do you just wait for 2 years to get your car, do you ask them to please move you up the line even though that is not fair to those who have been in the waiting list long before you decided to get the car, or do you pay a small and fair premium to an independent dealership or individual who has a car coming instead of paying the huge premiums that some of the large authorized Mercedes dealerships charge nowadays?

no one can just go to a dealer and "pay them off" if someone else has a legitimate deposit on a car. you can take them to court for that if you gave a deposit on the car 2 years ago (like this guy did) just to have the first one in the US or Florida or whatever. i'm sure he's getting the first one to arrive at his dealer and now he's made a buck on it.

now, if you didn't secure your order with a deposit and they just put you on a list, there may be an issue.

The CLS500s that are sold haven't even been released from the ports yet. "Launch date " doesn't neccessarily means that's the day it arrives at the dealerships. Or that they are even released into inventory on that day. Some may get delayed at the port, then you have the transport time to get the cars to the dealership, they have to go through inspection and of course, detail before delivery. So February is viable for a first delivery.

My CLS was released to the transporter 1-14

The transporter picked it up from Jacksonville, Florida (the port) 1-14. Probably at least a 20 hour drive. I'm in Dallas. Dealer is optimistic about it being ready for me to pick up on Monday. Says they have never been late for their launches.

Come on, you know very well that premiums and long waiting lists are also very common with BMWs, Ferraris, Bentleys, or any other exotic cars that have recently been released. It's not just a Mercedes thing

Congrats! Where in Dallas are you? I'm right near the West Village in Uptown. I can't wait for my first on-road CLS sighting!
