The EBCs (red stuff) are somewhat lower dust than the Porterfields. Both seem to have the same performance.

Just called EBC and they don't list different pads regular cls55 and cls55 with performance pkg. They guy on the phone couldn't confirm if they both used same pads or not. Have you replaced your pads and if so do you recall if it was indeed the same part number for both 030 and standard brake pads?

Thanks

I have EBC redstuff brake pads on my 500..Those things squeak and howl in colder weather..Extremely loud and annoying. I guess I did notice drop in brake dust(just seemed like a finer dust). Performance wise, didn't notice any difference.

I called Porterfield about the brake pads. This is the response from Wendy via email

Mr. Hudson,

With that upgrade they made the rotors bigger but not the brake pads

Fronts AP 1291 R4-S $349.95

Rears AP 1373 R4-S $179.95

Your vehicle calls for the pad number listed but all we have is what we call an AP 1405 which is essentially the same pad minus the counter weights and the pin holes are solid versus open like on your design. I have attached a picture of both. We believe your vehicle can run the AP 1405 but have never sold it for that car as yet so I cannot be 100% certain. If you did order them and they did not work we would absolutely take them back.

I asked about he counterwieghts this morning. I'll let yo know what she says

Counter weight questions answered and more info on future pads!!!

The counter weights were put in place to help with squealing. Our pads do not have that problem. They do not serve as any braking purpose as far as stopping goes. But it is up to you if you want to run the other ones. It will probably be later in the year before we make your actual pad.

Thank you,
Wendy

Let me know about them when you get them installed. I run the porterfields on my NSX and love them..I don't need brakes now but we all will at some time.

UPDATE

Just wanted to update anyone tuned in on this thread. I didn't get the EBC pads yet, but got alot more information for the CLS55 030 guys.

First off the pads on the 030 CLS63's are different so this information is only for 2006 CLS55.

Spoke with the engineers at Wagner and started looking into Wagner Thermoquiet pads. They actually differentiate a part number for performace pkg and non-performance pkg pads. They use part numbers MX983 and MX1231 for front pads. The MX983's are for cars with 030 pkg. The FMSI(aftermarket brakes standard) shows 2 "D" numbers for pads for this car....983 and 1231. The difference between the two is that the 1231 is a slightly wider pad, but the 983 comes with shims on both sides to make the pads fit correctly and both end up being the same installation width. The 983 also calls for a different pad compound which is supposed to be better performing.

So long story short we can use the same pads as the regular CLS55's. Most manufacturers don't differentiate the two since they are interchangeable and the 983 calls for a better compound and most aftermarket pads already use a better compound so use this D number when making part numbers.

Will post back after I make a decision as to which company I go with.

How are they different on the CLS63 030 package from the CLS55 030 package?

They only way to solve the riddle to the 030 pad issue is to purchase 030 and non 030's for the 55 and 63s respectively. Do a face to face comparison by mirroring right and lefts and measure the pad thickness.

Once done, return the set that is not compliant to the original MB Factory 030.

Mystery solved.

I know its been a while, but finally got my pads done. Went with the Wagner Thermoquiets. Front part # MX983 Rear Part # MX984

They look identical to stock 030 pads and fit perfectly! I have about 47k miles on the car and it was the cars first pad change. The fronts still had about 30% left and the rears looked to be over 60% left.

Anyhow I had alot of squeaking from the stock pads........every single time I would brake I heard a long loud squeak. I've had the replacements on for a week now and have heard light noise a couple times. It is alot quieter than stock. Braking power is about the same as stock.

I can't comment on brake dust since I haven't had them on for too long.

Install was also very simple. My mechanic had all 4 sides done in about 30 minutes. I was a little concerned about SBC and how I heard you have to disable it before changing pads. My mechanic said its not an issue and actually didnt remove the caliper and replaced 1 pad at a time (front has 4 pads on each caliper) to prevent caliper from locking.

Hope this helps other members.
