Yellow serves a purpose on certain brands and models: Ferrari, Lambo, SLS Black etc....

It doesn't work on a sedan IMHO ever though.

Yes I'd bet the tips are physically disconnected, I believe that trend was started by Lexus and now seems very prevalent. Since the tips are largely ornamental, and they vibrate and get very hot when welded to the exhaust, I assume it allows for a cleaner integration into the rear fascia/diffusor.
