Downpipes

For those owners that have installed aftermarket downpipes, would you do it again?

Is there any annoying drone in the car at highway cruising speeds?

How bad is the install? I have a good mechanic shop but they haven't worked on the GTS yet.

These cars sound so amazing that my primary goal is to just amplify that roar without changing the tone of the car.

I have done downpipes on both my C and CLS and I do not think I will do it again if I get a GTS. No drones on the CLS, I had a little on the C below 1.8K rpm
A resonator delete will get you the amplified sound for $250.
I read that the install on the GTS is even more complicated than the C or CLS as you have to drop the transmission. IMHO, not worth the labor if there is a resonator on the GTS.

There is no resonator on the GTS- its basically a cat back exhaust and very free flowing in stock format. I have driven a down pipe installed car and its loud but not excessively in the cabin. Drone is very subjective but I actually just heard acceleration noise.

As for the install its very extensive with a complete subframe removal and rear transaxle pull (what I heard) so expect an 8 hour job or so.

Yeah I don't think I want to do something that extensive unless it's in support of bigger mods down the road.

Per the Weistec instruction sheet, there is a lot of labor involved. Most of the under paneling have to come off, transmission dropped, torque tube and driveshaft removed before you get access to the downpipes. That's crazy!

So instead of down pipes, it sounds like buying an after market cat back exhaust is the way to go.

I'm not sure but id somewhat doubt it. I bet most of the remaining aural restriction is in the catalytic converters.

The only aftermarket exhaust for the GTS that I have heard of is from Brabus. It didn't sound that great on the Youtube videos and I am pretty sure will cost $15-20K installed. They want to charge $11K for the tune only!

I have a custom downpipe configuration right from the turbos and it was done at R1 Motorsports. We did not have to remove the driveshaft as I did not want such a laborious headache, so it can be done but you have to have an absolute pro working on it. When I brought the car back to Steve at Weistec for a reflash, he was impressed with how it was fabricated. Just some food for thought.

Agree with Kegudi- the job is labor-intensive, but as familiarity and expertise around teh new model grows a lot of guys will see how it's possible. That said, it's still no easy-off/easy-on job that I'd trust to just any local/indy shop that is seeing its first one, you know?
