I think that we would agree that there are a more than a few oil seals on an engine and it's a lot easier to break the news to a customer about their leaking car if you avoid the words "REAR MAIN SEAL".

Thankfully the engine does not need to be pulled. The bell housing, driveshaft and a lot of other components need to come off though.
Wow, mine is in the shop now to have the rear main seal replaced. Regardless that much disassembly on a brand new car is ridiculous. Will be hard to meet spec again exactly.

So my 2016 GTS seems to have a rear main oil seal leak as well. Of course,

it's out of warranty. Anyone had one replaced and had to pay for it? Curious as to cost. Also curious as to if it requires special tools.

It's engine oil. Just mixed with some dirt and road grime that makes is look different.

Thanks. Not an easy fix, will require trans removal.

I don't know specifically on the AMG GT-s, but on my GTR (Nissan) it was about 8 hours to R&R the transmission (I was upgrading the trans). I would imagine a good indie shop could do this for $1000 $1500 in labor. The dealership is probably 1 billion dollars

Any update on what the issue was, and cost/labour involved? Was it the rear main seal?

My 2017 AMG GT S has started leaking a little bit of oil in the same spot. Fortunately it’s still under factory warranty. I noticed a tiny puddle under my car on the garage floor. Not a big leak, maybe 3-4 mL of oil have leaked out, but it’s enough to make a small puddle on my floor.

Update on this - my dealer tech says:

On a dry sump vehicle the oil is kept in the separate oil reservoir during normal operation. When the vehicle sits for extended periods (multiple month), the oil slowly seeps into the crankcase and fills it up. This puts oil against the rear main seal, which isn’t designed for sitting oil for extensive periods. The oil then slowly seeps out and causes some drips on the bottom of the bell housing. We have seen this before and AMG says that this is normal, no repair will fix this.
I believe this explanation, as I’ve never seen any drips under the car in places where I’ve only parked for shorter periods (a couple days). I had parked the car in the same spot for a few months over winter, and it has sat for around a month between startups at other times in the same parking spot.

I do not believe this explanation. Oil should not pool and drip out of the engine or transmission. Sounds like your dealer is giving you the run-around. Find another dealer and get another opinion.

Just found out my GTS 2016 has a leak on the main seal. Unfortunately, I just ran out of warranty about 5 months ago. Didn't see it because partly the car has been not driven much over covid.
Any suggestions?

Thanks

The rear main seal is not designed to hold a static pool of oil against it. When the sits for a few weeks, oil flows down from the cylinder walls and head, and forms a pool at the bottom of the crankcase. Since there’s no wet sump, and the oil pump isn’t sucking it away when the car is off, it pools against the rear main seal. If you haven’t driven it frequently, and it has sat for over a month at times, then this is probably the issue. Mine didn’t leak when I drove it regularly.

Thanks Wizee, so you think it might just be the accumulation of oil from the cylinder head etc and not the seal leak? My indy mechanic who changed the oil thought it was the seal. But I am afraid to take it to the dealer to have them take a look and have me quote $5K.
But I will be doing that just to rule things out!

Clean the bottom of the bell housing, drive the car every couple weeks, and see if it still leaks. If it still leaks, you need a new seal.

Replacement of the seal is a fairly involved job that requires a lot of disassembly, so I wouldn’t do it casually without confirming it’s not just caused by oil pooling from the car sitting too long.

If I remember correctly, there MAY be a recall on the seal. I think I had to have mine done on my E1.

The dealer service writer can check for you.

Regards

Just an update.

Dropped it off the dealer to get a look at it. They just called me yesterday that it is indeed the rear main seal. They quoted $5083. Just 3 months out of warranty
Also, I have been complaining about the rattle in the passenger seat since the car was under warranty and everytime they said they couldn't replicate it. Now that I have figured out to replicate it and showed it to them they said it's out of warranty and will cost $2800 to replace the frame assembly to fix it.
Ironic thing is that I can actually count the number of time someone has been in the passenger seat.

Opened up a ticket with MB USA to see if they can back up their claim for quality on a 22k miles car. We'll see what they come up with.

Hi, there is a lot of documented issues with the seat rattle issue. I had it for the longest time. Check the posts on here,

Thanks Gordon. Yes, will dig it out. I had my driver's side replace while under warranty.

Funny how when it's under warranty it's "working as designed" but when out of warranty it's a $5k bill to fix.

Hi GTSEdition1,

I too have a rear main seal leak on my 2016 GTS with only 21k miles. What was the result of the ticket you opened up with MB? Thanks.

Chad
