SWITCH FROM A PORSCHE
I presently drive a 2017 911S. Although I do like the car, I've had several Porsches and am looking to make a change. The two main vehicles I have in mind is an AMG GT or Audi R8. I do realize this is an MB forum but would like to get some insight as to any members who have driven an R8, changed to an R8, owns an R8, or have switched from an R8 to a AMG GT.
Any input would be very helpful!

I own a 911S and an R8 V10 as well as an AMG GTS so I think I can at least give you my personal opinion.
Let's get the 911 out of the way first - the 911 is a 911 and will always be it's own thing. Having said that, I think a fair comparison to the AMG GTS is a GT3 not a 911S.
The R8 - if you plan on getting the first gen don't even consider the V8 as a fair comparison. As much as I like my AMG GTS I still prefer my R8 and that's mainly due to my preference toward NA engines.
The AMG GTS is a faster car, but the R8 is more exciting and engaging car to drive simply because of the V10 engine. It makes you feel more like you are driving an exotic car rather than a muscle car.
Again, my personal humble opinion. I hope this helps a little in your decision.

AMG GTS Solarbeam Yellow
Having had 2 R8s (2014 v10 S tronic and 2012 R8 GT) and also a 991 turbo s which was tuned etc
This GT S is my first mercedes and it combines the best elements of both of those cars. It has the speed of the porsche (mine is tuned and downpiped and when I had my turbo s with a cobb OTS tune my friend with same GT S setup was even with me on roll racing on track) and it has the sound and looks of the r8.
I think you should drive both cars, 911 is a wonderful all around car which will be fun to drive and fly under most radar. R8 will be a bit less comfy and fly under no radar. GT S will be about same comfort as audi and will fly under some radar, in between porsche and audi.
It really depends on what you care for. I really enjoyed all 4 cars, but I would take my GT S over any stock gen 1 R8.

Not sure the GT3 is a fair comparison to an AMG GTS though. 911GTS maybe, but the GT3 experience is unlike anything else I've ever encountered.
I've back-to-backed my pair a couple of times this week and unless you start in the AMG, impressions after the switch are pretty uninspiring. Pace is similar, but the connection to car, confidence inspiring feel and overall driver feedback, set it on another level.
AMG GT is a GT in every sense.

AMG GT will feel a little more wild, also its handling and steering is somewhat light and twitchy, compared to the AWD R8 and delicate steering planted rear engine 911.
Performance is pretty similar on all, although the AMG does gain pace in a quite relentless way.
AMG will score in interior quality and the overall feeling of owning something that is totally bespoke. R8/911 interiors share their respective family DNA, whereas the AMG GT interior is simply a unique thing of beauty.
Anyhow, I plan to add a v10 soon and the AMG GT, while not being my favourite car, easily secures its place in my garage for the amazingly special and rewarding car it is.

The AMG GTS and R8 will be a step up from your 911S.
The GT3 has more direct connection with the driver than the AMG but the AMG is a better daily driver for me. The interior is more luxurious, the leather is nicer, the amenities are top notch. If you had a current model GT3, it would be a tough decision to switch.
You should check out the new R8 RWS. I owned a Huracan and prefer RWD driving dynamics. The R8 RWS has attractive pricing while offering exotic car ownership.
