CARPLAY
#26
I have this in my 2018 GTR. Easy install and awesome quality. CARPLAY and Android Auto. Uses the existing microphone, so no need to run wires for that. Steering controls and all other controls and camera works as they did before.

That said I can enable it when desired.

Basically, I only use it for Waze I did not even hook up the Audio inputs. I do like the fact that I can mirror the screen for certain apps and will probably put a front camera on in the future.

Does anyone know of someone in the Philadelphia area that has successfully installed this unit (I am not brave enough to do it myself). I had a quote today for another CarPlay unit to be installed – all in for $1,500. Seems a little high?

Still trying to get my head around this whole CarPlay thing. Buy an iPad Mini or an iPhone and mount it and voilŕ you have CarPlay wherever you want with way more functionality for less. My M5 airplay sucks.

Agreed. I would rather have the iPhone as a separate screen and the GT Comand screen.

BBS63, I tend to agree with you. There appear to be two offerings, the one from Amazon for $300 which appears to bypass the Burmiester sound system and the Naviks which is $675 and claims great integration. Several GT owners have installed these items and the one thing that is very appealing to me is I could remove the system if it is a mess as they are both plug and play…no cutting and soldering of the car’s harness.
Thank you for the response. I wish you well, enjoy spring in these amazing cars!

I paid someone in Atlanta $975 to install Carplay. Works pretty well, but takes a little getting used to. You have to hit the hang-up button on the steering wheel to toggle between Carplay and the Command screen. Another thing I don't love is while recording audio messages for Whatsapp there's a lot of feedback.

I am a big fan of CarPlay. We have it in our Porsche Macan, and I also had it retrofitted in our 2014 Porsche 911 (991.1). The thing I mostly enjoy is the ability to control navigation via Siri, ask Siri for things like "what's the weather..." or "play the latest news" – while also being able to control music and podcasts via physical buttons (skip tracks, forward, etc.).
I was therefore planning to retrofit CarPlay in my newly acquired 2018 GTC, but the lack of a touch screen and the high price (~$1,500) got me thinking: What if I instead could enjoy the "best of both worlds", by connecting the iPhone via Bluetooth, and be able to trigger Siri by long pressing the voice control button on the steering wheel, and at the same time be able to skip music tracks on the COMMAND system using the "scroll wheel".
So, I found this super cheap ~$12 simple and elegant iPhone MagSafe iPhone holder on Amazon: , and I will be testing it out in the coming days. My first experience tonight (without actually driving the car), is that the holder seems very sturdy and I can easily mount and dismount the iPhone with one hand. Also, I can mount the iPhone either vertically or horizontally (for a larger map and navigation use). In the coming days, the big question will be, if the magnets are strong enough to keep the phone connected on bumpy roads. I'll let you know.
For now this might give me the best of both worlds at 1% of the price of a CarPlay retrofit. Let's see if it's too good to be true ;-)

You may want to look at ProClip to hold your phone. You will need a MagSafe holder in addition to this holder. I installed one of these in my GLK350 and I will install one in my 2018 AMG GTS. The quality of the ProClip is excellent and instead of clamping into the air vents, it clamps onto the dash.

You can access Siri with just your voice (“Hey Siri”), no need to long press the talk button. You’ll notice that the radio or media that’s playing through COMAND will automatically reduce in volume when Siri is listening to your command.
I much prefer having two screens (iPhone + COMAND) and having the full functionality of each device. I have CarPlay in my 2019 G Wagon and I don’t love it. Other than charging the phone battery and looking cleaner, there is no advantage.
I would not use a dash mount on the GT - you will damage the leather dash, or a vent mount (I scratched the vents on my old B250 this way, and the GT has similar vents).

I just saw that your holder mounts in a cup holder. NOT A GOOD IDEA! I used to do this in my 2015 C63 507 and had an accident. I looked down at my phone for <1 second and it was all it took to rear-end the car in front that stopped suddenly.
You’ve been warned!
Mount the phone up high, on the windshield, so it’s in your line of sight.

I second ProClip. Excellent products!

I will not mess with phone holders, iPads or other band aid solutions. Looks like crap IMO and is inferior to a build-in experience. We have already have a screen in the car and the CarPlay adapter simply allows for it to show the content I want rather than what MB is providing.
Perfect for Waze to supplement our RD and it is completely seamless. Surprised how reliable the wireless CP works...

Has anyone tried this solution that also adds a touch screen overlay?
