2020 GTC EXHAUST MUTED - SOLUTION
Hey Guys,
I am new here, happy to be part of MBworld, greetings from Hungary!
I have a 2020 GTC Roadster and the performance exhaust is muted in all modes, no crackles and pops at all. It is extremely disappointing. I was reading related threads and found the following:
- Since 2019 cars have OPF and therefore the injector map was changed to protect OPF (no more bangs, pops and crackles) any A45 has better sound, that the AMG GTC.
- Deleting secondary cats and OPF is not the solution, sound gets a bit louder, but pops and crackles will not return and warranty will be void
- Using devices like RENNTECH EVM will make it louder but will not bring back the pops and crackles (and probably warranty also void)
- There are rumors about “official” software upgrades but MB did not confirm it yet
Just be honest, several of us (including me) buy these cars for the sound. AMG was famous for it’s sound. Now it is gone, we have spent 100K+ USD and did get a very good GT without any sound. It is like it was castrated.
I think the very same happed to all 4000 V8 biturbo AMGs.
My question: has anybody ever found a real solution for that?
Anyone ever contacted MB?
Was there any answer?
Thank,
Feri

Some of the ‘20 upgrades are cool
But that’s why I have a ‘19. Noise. Hang tight I’m sure there will be an aftermarket solution soon enough. One of the tuning companies will probably be able to bring back da noise with a tune... in the mean time, enjoy you new ride!

Isn't the crackle and pop a bit of a trade off for power though? It's fuel igniting downstream in the exhaust system and not burning at the cylinder compression stroke that makes that noise. It sounds awesome but unless your'e running no cats and minimal muffler (like a race car), to get that pronounced crackle the payoff is going to be power - you have to run rich.

Two things: I bought the EVM from Renntech, works great and a 20 min. install by my tech. 2nd, I hear down pipes will really wake the exhaust up...........waiting to install those on my GTR PRO with titanium exhaust.

It’s truly a shame what they did to the sound of all 2020 cars due to noise regulations in the EU. My 2019 GTC sounds like it escaped from hell! It’s one of the joys of driving the car for me. I’m sure a tune can help but I believe there is also a particulate filter that mutes the exhaust.

Hi,
Can you please let me know your experiences:
- Did it bring more pops and crackles or just made the sound louder?
- Any disadvantage?
- Is that an issue with the factory warrant?
Is your car with opf/ppf equipped?
Thank you!

answer is :
get an evm (more exhaust volume)
delete the 2 secondary cat ... (more "pops and crackles")/( it will still pass the emission test)

The pops&bangs are technically for anti-lag to produce an exhaust stream that keeps the turbos spinning off throttle. IMO, they were way overdone in the past as the cars pop&banged even when driving normally and no anti-lag was needed. Now they are back more to their actual purpose and only occur if you drive hard.

I guess I'm a unicorn here but I don't particularly care for the loud bangs my 2018 GTC will emit. Like a cherry bomb going off. I don't mind the crackles and burbles, but the really loud bangs just seem like pretentious drama, particularly since they can be turned off and on.

Not sure the derogatory use of "childish" is needed here. I have no idea why they were actually removed. My 2018 GTC never "bangs" like a firecracker. It just gurgles melodically. I don't believe anyone on here who enjoys that sound deserves the moniker "childish'. You could claim that for ANY engine sound louder than a sewing machine. I very much enjoy my engine sound and highly doubt any citizen anywhere has run off and called authorities to complain other than perhaps out of envy.

Car manufacturers can be heavily fined in Germany if their cars don't meet environmental standards which also include noise. It's not uncommon that the police will stop cars in cities for sound checks and the car will immediately pulled out of circulation if too loud or any exhaust modification are found. Even stock performance exhausts had been considered by some cities as violating rules.
So the trend in Germany is to dial down the sound. This was done at the same time as OPF filters were installed but German companies were reducing the exhaust sound irregardless. Since the AMG sound is important for customers, the exhausts were left as unmolested as possible in countries without tight noise regulations...

Same here. And to restate, I enjoy the crackles and burbles it makes at lower RPMS in Sport+ and Race. The explosions though remind me of older cars that either have a timing or mixture problem and are badly backfiring. It also reminds me of the ricers who tune their cars to make that happen. It is not a good sound to my ears. It's a "somethings wrong" sound.
