Not sure about Michelin 4s tires on track

I have to decide what to do about my tires. My car cane with Super Sports and from my experience they are garbage on track so I upgraded to 4s all around in factory sizing. It is clear my car is way underrated from the factory. Way underrated. At speed the tires didn’t heat up much and I didn’t feel very confident in them. I managed to put a bit of heat in them and then aired them down to 30 all around and then tried to put a bit more heat in them and it worked a bit. I was hoping these would bridge the gap between the Super Sports and the Cup 2’s but they didn’t feel much different than the Super Sports. The other issue is the car feels under tired in the rear and I’m not sure about the fronts yet. My gut says upsize to GTR sizing but not necessarily Cup 2’s but 4s doesn’t come that way in a 325/30/20.

I have a big track day coming up in 2 weeks at a big Grand Prix track which will allow me to stretch the car out and it will be in a more proper element. I’m hesitant to go Cup 2 because I really want something I can use everywhere without having to worry. I don’t have the ability to run 2 sets of wheels either. Am I missing something with the 4s? Thanks for letting me rant. Cheers!

You're not missing anything. Street tires are underwhelming at the track.

Like I said in your other thread, upgrading to 325s isnt going to do much.

I really hoped they would be better

than the super sports. Clearly it wasn’t worth the spend. I would have been $2000 richer leaving the super sports on...

That said this particular car has a very strong motor and with the other thread having dynoed our cars to have power in the 600-650 hp range I think I will be moving up to GTR sizes all around next and will probably go back to SC2’s too... oh well. Win some and lose some

For what it is worth on my Shelby GT350r (when I had it) - I ran Super Sports, PS3 (PS4 were not out yet) and Cup 2s. The Cup 2s were drastically different on the track (hot and sticky) and although in that car I certainly noticed it around town, rain, etc -- in the AMG I find that the Cup 2s aren't as bad in the rain, around town or even the slightly cooler temps. I think the weight distribution has a lot to do with it.

I felt like the car could stick to anything at the track...

Agreed.

I've had it out twice now at this track (https://islandmotorsportcircuit.com/) scroll down and it'll show the 19 corners - and I've yet to really come unglued. Brakes on the other hand get quite a workout.

and I’ve been going there since 2012... last year with Cup 2’s I had arguably my best days there. I was picking up speed in areas I hadn’t and the confidence inspired by those tires is measurable...

Wow that’s a tight track...

19 corners!!! Have you had an opportunity to go anywhere else that is more open? I think you’d be on the brakes as much as the throttle at that track... at Mosport I can actually do the entire track while cooling down touching the brakes at only one corner while maintaining about 60-70% of full throttle speeds. But there is only 10 corners and the back straight is gloriously long...

Not yet with this car but will be heading to Area 27 ( https://www.area27.ca/circuit/) June 19 for two days of lapping.

I’ve been only once with the old car and suspect the GT will perform incredible. Much longer. Can really stretch it out.

Your home track looks great. If I ever end up with the car in Ontario i would definitely check it out.

Its one of my favourites. I keep trying to get out to Mt. Tremblant but something always gets in the way.. maybe this year🤞🤞🤞

Let me know how Area 27 works out. I’ve heard great things...

IDK about 600-650 (and yes Ive seen that dyno); the car would trap much higher than 127-128 MPH if it had that much power. I think Renntech had the engine dynoed at around 575 HP.

I don’t think 25 hp makes that much of a difference

that said I never really felt too much of a power difference between S+ and R. My bet is these are somewhere in the 550-600 hp range depending on what day of the week the engine was built 😎

fun ones.
4S is just an evolution of SuperSport so its normal to find similar characteristics in both tyres. I actually have a set of 4S for "inters" on my race car, they are good tyres for certain conditions.

I'm not really sure about your other comments, its easy to get heat into any tyre in the GT cars, they put heat into the tyres faster than any car I've ever driven. The amount of air I have to let our of the fronts is insane.

I recall reading in the manual that the changing between S+ and R only adjusts just the fashion in which power is delivered (sharper throttle response, gear shifts), not the actual power level.

EDIT~ that's for my GTS. Might be different for the GTC

Are you running with a group on June 19th?
A few guys and I from Alberta had booked a trip for May 22 but it was cancelled.
The race season here is still a total loss.

That is ugly man. Sorry to hear that.

I am unclear as to what the format will be. A buddy of mine is a member and he wanted to head down for his birthday. I'm not sure if he has booked the whole track out or if we are joining in on a 'members weekend'.

I'll shoot him a text and ask.

Yeah, the government at one point was going to allow the track to open to a limited number of cars per day, but 3 days before the first track day they changed their minds and shut the track down again.
At this point things have not changed. Another attempt at Area 27 is being planned for September 10 & 11.
The PRO is now just sitting as I have other cars keeping me entertained. Thinking of selling the PRO and going dedicated track car for next year. So if you know anyone that wants a PRO mine is potentially for sale.

Wild. Hope you get on on the 10/11

Will keep the PRO in mind man. Mine has been great so far. Just north of 9000km.

The "straight" at Mosport is really fun. I haven't seen anything like it on any other track.
