Backfiring

I touch on this in another thread but it's still on my mind. We test drove a 2019 GTC hardtop and loved the car. Can't get that uncontrollable smile when your foot hits the floor off my mind. What also keeps coming to mind is the loud backfiring. I stomped the pedal and she impressively took off but I got a shotgun type explosion between gear shifts. I can appreciate the little backfire when downshifting and such but is it normal to have that loud of backfire on acceleration? I'm wondering if it was just a bad tuneup on the car we test drove. Not many of these models around to compare. Thought to ask here..

Completely normal. Here's a video of mine, showing how it backfires whenever I shift or lift off the throttle:

Welcome to AMG...

Perfectly normal. Get an EVM and it will be louder and sharper...

Steve, if your intention was to induce my suicide via ocd with the spelling of the thread title, let me assure you that your mission is all but accomplished.

Here's a question that might keep you up all night ...

If you type up a post and notice you made a spelling mistake after the time frame past which the edit tag will show, do you leave the spelling mistake so as to avoid the unsightly edit tag or do you fix the mistake and somehow manage to live on with the edit tag at the bottom of the post?

I think you last post answers that question, still, my assumption is that it was a close call ... it always is for me.

Exactly, plus I discovered that the forum software doesn't allow for that many letters in a row without breaks which it automatically insert.

Needless to say between the spelling and the unsolicited spacing, sleep has yet to come to me since that post.

I'll throw my hat in the ring again here, and say that the artificial crackling the GTs make is overdone. It does sound like backfires rather than the crackles and burbles of other exotic cars. My previous car was an F430 that popped and crackled and it sounded good.

I wish there was a way to have the cracking noise user variable rather than either on or off. As it is I usually choose off.

If you hear the GT popping with your eyes closed you won't know whether it's a GT or a riced up Civic.

I suspect I will be in the minority LOL.

I didn’t know there was a way to turn that off?? I agree with you. To me it sounded like a mistuned car. I watch street drag racing on tv and don’t hear them backfiring like that. I’ve never owned a car like this but to me the loud backfiring takes away from the car.

Outside of a crackle and pop specific tune, our cars do it in certain modes to keep the turbos spooled up...

I read that before. Can you tell a difference in turbo lag between Sport and Sport+ (without and with popping)?

I looked for a difference and didn't find one.

Watch this video. Nearly one hour of pops and crackles.

I've never tested it, tbh. I'm either in I* or Race, and if I'm having fun, it's always Race.

Here's another video highlighting the glorious crackles and pops on downshift during semi spirited driving in Race mode.

This is what I would be expecting from GTC. I know it's a GT and not a GTC but... Couldn't hear any backfiring. When I test drove it was a shotgun blast between shifts.. Also, anyone know the color of this car?

There are tunes that can increase the crackles and pops, generally with no real benefit to performance. I'm not sure what the car you drove had, or what you consider to be "shotgun blast". Both my video and the one Orcbolg shared are representative of the normal level of crackles on a 2016-2019 AMG GT family car (at least ones that have the dual mode exhaust). You get fewer crackles when exhaust flaps are closed, and they mostly go away when the engine is in normal/comfort mode, though you also lose a little throttle response sharpness and get a tiny bit of turbo lag.

The 2020+ cars are quieter and crackle less because of stricter European sound and emissions rules. The base GT might also be a bit quieter than the C and R.
