What size tube to drain oil tank?

Hi, I'm doing a DYI oil change this wknd and heave heard that it's best and less messy to slide a tube over the oil tank plug to help guide the oil. One member said that a toilet paper roll works perfectly, but I'd like to use something a bit more robust. Does anyone know what diameter it needs to be, and if wall-thickness of the tube matters? I haven't had a chance yet to jack the car up and look and measure. Thanks for any help.
