New to me GTC engine arrived today

With the help of Herr Stenzel in Germany I found and bought a very low mileage AMG GTC engine that I need for a project.
We did airfreight it from Frankfurt to Houston where I picked it up today.

Thank you Stenzel for all your help.

From Florida - Rockport, TX

Ready to mount the special idler onto the hub - the trailer has be modified to allow the wheel to be fitted onto the idler

Idler on hub

Wheel mounted onto the Idler

With the Idler on the car could be rolled around to get it on the lift

Removing of the original engine and drive shaft

The original engine has been removed and sit on the engine stand prior to taking it apart. More later...

Well this motor is going to be installed in the 2020 AMG GTC in the picture.
The Florida owner of the car bought it new from his local dealer and had the misfortune that at 7K miles on it somebody in his household drove it through a puddle of water and managed and the running engine sucked up some water in the intakes which hydro-locked the engine. His insurance company totaled the car and he bought it back after it was totaled in the hope that somebody (dealer or other) could repair it for him.

When he realized that this kind of service was not available locally and when he learned that I might have the required parts available from a M178 engine which I had replaced earlier on in my own AMG GTS he asked if I could help. I agreed to help but I told him that not until I had removed his engine from his car and opened it up to examine the extend of the damage I would not be able to tell him if his engine was repairable.

So last December I hauled the car from his place in Florida in order to remove the engine and taking it apart. When the engine does not run it requires a special idler to be mounted on one of the rear wheels in order to be able to roll it around (see the attached pictures).

After I had the engine out of the car and taken it apart we found a broken piston rod in the #4 cylinder and bend piston rod in the #3 cylinder, unfortunately the broken #4 rod had damaged the #4 cylinder wall to the point that a repair by just replacing the rods and pistons were out of the question. With the help of Stenzel I found and bought an identical/complete MB certified replacement GTC motor in Germany That I have now sold to the owner of the car whereby I will do the complete installation after which he plans to come down and pick it up.

For those that interested and want to play along at home I'll be posting some pictures from time to time with some of my comments.

Hi Herman,

Low mileage? 120 mls is new. :-)

The engine arrived safely. Top. I'm delighted for you. Now I can sleep peacefully again. :-)

Did you find the test report / VIN of the donor vehicle and the new spark plugs on the engine?

Called the seller today and personally thanked him again, for the problem-free transaction.
Should send you nice greetings and a thank you.

Thanks for the pictures.
You are an asset to this forum. I'm very happy to help you.

Best regards

Stenzel

Great work Stenzel and Hendrik! Keep me posted on progress too.

Can I ask you for info on the Defi gauges as well? PM or email. I am on a mission to do same, but I am looking (and have been looking) for a spare center vent as I like to not modify original factory parts.

Thanks guys!

With so few miles on the engine I wonder what happened to the donor car.

Hi Hendrik,

More about this engine. Coming from Germany? Does it have electronics with it (ECU)? I see the engine harness going up to the ECU.

Thanks,

Acta

It came from Germany with an MB proof certificate for (KM's 194), part number, serial number, factory number and build date - No ECU, complete wiring harness, starter, AC compressor, PS pump and alternator.

After I have been real busy with some yacht sales business I have now have been able to get the preliminary work done before the engine goes back into the car.
The main concern was tho get the exhaust system lined up prior to doing this, hereby pictures of how I got this resolved.
Enjoy!

Hi Henrik,

These screws are hell. This is a safe tension-free installation. Respect.

As always. Very professional. It's great how you work. Thanks for the pictures and suggestions.

How do the "New downpipe / cut out the stock downpipes guys" do that? ;-)

Kind regards.

Thank you Stenzel,

I now have mounted the engine/transmission assembly back into the car and will get ready to install the inter coolers, lube oil hoses, all other hoses/wires and pull a vacuum/charge the AC system before I'm ready to start it up. I try to make a little bit of progress every day as I have quite a few other activities that I have to deal with as well.

Hi Henrik,

Yes, there is still a life outside of the GT universe. :-)

And time is always short......

Will be finished with my "daughter full time project" this week. (temporary :-)
First do everything that has accumulated in the workshop in the meantime. I've had customers' vehicles in for weeks. Meanwhile 5. All work with a little more effort.
Did the smaller standard things right away. But only because I also worked on Sundays. Against my faith :-) :-) :-)

GT has been neglected for a long time. Maybe I can do the exhaust flaps / blow off project before Switzerland (mid-May).

Kind regards.

Stenzel
