New Tires

So I’m thinking at some point switching tires. My GTC comes with Super Sports. I’m thinking about PS4’s but am also considering Sport Cup 2’s or Sport Cup 2 Connect. I’ve also read about a Sport Cup 2R although they may be the same as the Connect? Would also step up a width size or two.

Dry weather only. No rain. Looking for maximum grip.

Hi Mike,

How are you using the car? Will it be tracked?

Best,

Acta

No it won’t. But I don’t mind sacrificing wet weather performance as the car won’t be driven in the rain.

From what I’ve read the regular Sport Cup could go 8000 miles IF it’s not tracked. Seeing as I don’t anticipate more then 2-3k miles per year I’m not too concerned about wear.

As for noise it’s a roadster and between the wind and the open exhaust valve I don’t see that being an issue.

The only other question mark is “comfort”. The SS I have on now are pretty good at 34/35psi F/R. I know the sport cups have a firmer sidewall. I don’t know how much firmer but I’m hoping it’s not teeth rattling…..

FYI - Regarding the size. Usually you can move up (or down) one size front/back and still be within the engineering standards for the min/max wheel/tire widths.

Physically, you can mount all kinds of sizes onto a wheel and members here sometimes do but doesn't mean the bead/wheel rim seal is meeting design standards.

Hope that helps....

Yes I plan on going 275 front and 315 or even 325 in the rear.

Cup 2s ride like crap vs PS4s for DD. Mind you, I am comparing ZPs so regular Cup 2s might be a bit softer.
Connects are meant to be used with the Michelin App and sensors. I tried them, long story the app sucked and I gave up (prematurely).
Shameless plug... if anyone wants to buy my Connect Sensors PM me. LOL. Probably a bit better 2 years later.
Great in theory, but did not support our cars directly at that time and I had some connection issues between my phone and the sensor module at the track.

I would agree regarding the sensors and app. But it’s my understanding the cup 2 connect also has a different compound that offers better dry weather grip and deeper grooves that offer better wet weather grip (although that doesn’t matter to me). But the deeper grooves also imply longer tread life.

OK. This is interesting... I see Tire Rack no longer offers CUP 2 ZPs in a connect, only regular CUP 2.
I had bought 2 sets of Cup 2 ZP Connects. They were identical to regular Cup 2 ZPs.

Something I just noticed on Tire Rack, there are now both 240 and 180 treadwear Cup 2s.

I have read their are “variations “ of the cup to depending on the OEM mfg and model.

As for certain sizes not being available the rep at tire rack said it’s possibly due to Covid supply chain shortages. Or he said he’s “heard” Michelin is phasing out the Cup 2 in favor of the Cup 2 connect and the Cup 2 R…..

I do not like Cup2 on my GT R as a DD option, very noisy and ride is harsh. Want to switch to p4s.

I have tons of experience with these type tires on sports cars that I don't track. My favorite tire ever is the PSS, then the PS4S. I would not change yours until they get around 4 or 5 yrs old and I'd try to replace them with the same tire. My 2017 used GTS had early 2017 dated PS4S when I bought the car last summer with 41k miles, so it seemed they might have been the original tires. I got lucky and found a set of PSS to replace them and the ride is much better. On my other cars I really had not noticed much difference between those two tires so it was probably somewhat due to new tires riding better.

Yes, be sure to get Cup 2's that are homologated for Mercedes/AMG. They tend to have stiffer sidewalls to handle the weight.

Note that, in addition to being harsh riding and noisy (for daily driving), Cup 2's have minimal wet-road grip (unless you're somehow able to put heat into them). My track data from C63 S and GTR Pro shows 0.6 G lateral grip and then they're sliding. By comparison, PS4S track data from C43 and C63 S shows just over 0.9 G lateral grip.

If I'm running straight on a wet (but no standing puddles) road/track (with cold tires) and suddenly floor the GTR Pro, it'll always break traction at speeds up to 130 kph and sometimes up to 150 kph. Passing "in the wet" requires careful throttle management. Personally, I consider the Cup 2's to be dangerous on wet roads (with a 400+ HP RWD vehicle).
