How to remove battery

I need to store my GTs for about 4 months. The garage I am using doesn’t have access to an outlet. I am looking to pull the battery and charge it at home with my Li-Ion trickle charger. I’ve removed the terminals and the 13 mm nut at the bottom of the battery strap. I tried pulling on the strap (looped through the bracket) and it doesn’t budge. I can’t see any other connection point for the bracket and with it in place, the battery can not come out.

what am I missing ?

Hi,

I've removed the battery several times. It's been a while though. I didn't see any problem here. It was self-explanatory and so simple that there was nothing special to remember about it.

1. First (it is safer) remove the negative terminal. (wrench size 10mm)
2. Remove the red terminal cover and then the positive terminal underneath (wrench size 10mm)
3a. Lithium battery only: Disconnect the bus cable plug (press the retaining lug). This connection is located next to the negative pole.
3b. AGM battery only: Remove degassing line.
4. Remove the retaining screw (wrench size 13mm). (Holds the "clamp" to which the belt is also attached)
5. Then pull the battery slightly sideways out of the opposite holder/clamp.

Installation is exactly the opposite.

Tightening torques:
Retaining screw 20 Nm / 15 lbs
Pole screws 6 Nm / 4.5 lbs

Come on, dare you :-)

Best Regards

Stenzel

@Stenzel-Germany after you took off the 13mm nut, did the bracket move/lift up? Mine is solid, like it is welded on or there is some other hidden attachment. Removing the nut basically did nothing. (Hence my confusion)

I haven't removed the GTR's battery (yet) but with at least one other AMG (presumably similar battery-clamp setup) I did have a case where the battery seemed "locked in" by the clamp, even after removing the clamping nut. The issue was that the clamp had set at an angle and was "jammed" between the battery and the bolt threads so it wouldn't move. The fix was a tap on the top edge of the clamping bracket/piece and it came loose. I used a long blade screwdriver and a small "persuader."

Finally

@user33 finally got back to the AMG (been traveling for work) thanks for the suggestion. That was it. Amazing how it took a good 5-10 blows of the hammer/screwdriver to free up the clip. Once it popped, no issues. Put it on the trickle charger and showed 50% charge after being unhooked for about 2 months. I am curious if just unhooking the battery (covering the terminals) would allow the battery to hold a charge much longer? (Not sure what the parasitic loss of the electrical system is).

Anyone know what issues I may have rehooking up the battery (different “resets”) ?

Wow, that's some serious "persuading" ... but glad it worked. It must have been "nicely" rust-bonded.

FWIW, having disconnected the battery at least once on each of a C43, C63 S and the GTR, the only issue was that, a couple of times, I had to re-sync the window roll-up action. IIRC, I think it was just roll it all the way down then all the way up and hold the up button for a number of seconds after it's at the top ... and done. YMMV, of course.

Also, FWIW, I kept an AGM battery that was replaced in an E350 and have it sitting on my bench for testing, etc. purposes. I generally hook up the charger to it every few months but, even though it's a weak batter, is typically still above 11.5V at that time. However, as you might guess, the internal drain (parasitic losses) within any given battery will vary.

Hi,

Disconnecting the battery definitely helps to keep the charge level longer. Except for the internal discharge, there is no "leakage" current. I've disconnected the battery several times.

The only thing I had to "learn" were the automatically folding exterior mirrors. But it was easy. Fold the mirrors in and out manually once. Then it works again.

Best regards

Stenzel
