I use clay twice a year. Once in the fall and once in the spring.
Using clay to often isn't necessary. You should polish after clay. You can also and should polish the paint with a light "finishing polish" every three months to remove any paint problems, then re wax.
So here is my car detailing time table:
April clay, polish wax
June Wax (polish if I find any problem areas)
August Polish re wax
October Wax
November clay, polish wax.
Here in the north east that is all I can do as it gets to cold for any kind of car care except washing when it gets above freezing.
If you live in a warmer area, you can wax in January and then re polish and wax at the end of February.

A light "finishing" polish will work.
