I heard Clear Guard was a good protective measure, what about gentle but thorough cleaning?

The condition is somewhat worn (hasn't been cared for too well by the previous owner).

Frank- You may want to find some Meguiar's #39 (Heavy Duty Vinyl Cleaner) and then follow it up with some Meguiar's #40 (Vinyl & Rubber Cleaner/Conditioner) each product is about $9. Wash the top like you would your paint however use a brush to loosen up any dirt. Once dry, follow that up with the #39 then the #40. Hope this helps.

CLK437- Correct me if I am wrong but you've got a cloth top.. get a product called RaggTopp about $30 for a cleaner and protectant (2 step process)
