Is it EVER ok to machine wash a black car?

Is it EVER ok to machine wash a black car?
I mean, I know that sending a black car through an automated wash is a crappy thing to do but the weather is horrible and snowing on and off interspersed with nice days. So are these mitigating factors:
The type of machine, perhaps?
How well waxed and maintained it is?
Getting all the salt and crap off being more important?
Bear in mind, its not something I want to do all the time. But its too cold to hand wash at my place and I dont want to keep doling out twice a week at the hand wash which runs me $30 or so.
I know the guys in this forum are super meticulous but try to bear in mind that I'm just an average guy trying to look after a somewhat better than average car and not a Sultan with a Koenigsegg.

I would rather recommend you pick up a few nice plush micro fibers, and a bottle of optimum no rinse...and wash your car in your own garage without getting cold....
