Scuffed Door / Wheel Area, any ideas?

Scuffed Door / Wheel Area, any ideas?
Pardon me if I sound like a total car newb, because I am. The car is a GL450.
So basically, the area between the right rear door closing area and wheel has suddenly been scuffed. Along with some paint coming off.
I have no idea how this happen..
Could it be from a passing object? Some civilian? A passenger? My driving? Wife's driving?
Any ideas on what I can do to repair this, can I remove it? How bad is it. :S
