A great resource is watching AMMO NYC videos on YouTube. Larry has great videos for beginners through advanced techniques, and there are a lot of great tips and pieces of advice.
The devil is in the details. First step is making sure you're washing your car the right way (don't use brush style automatic car washes, for example) - two bucket wash method, proper cloths and things like that. Claybar and wax will do wonders, unless you need to polish the paint for swirl marks. That's where the videos will come in handy - they give great lessons on knowing how to know where to start. Always start least-aggressive with pads or compounds/polishes and things like that. It's really hard to outline all the options on a forum post.
