Currently, a '93 2.5 turbo with 219,000 miles and an '05 CDI with 21,000 miles.
My first love? A special order '71 220D bought in late '70. With TTL, it was just under $6000. In '81, it was totalled in an automobile accident. The insurance company wrote out a check for $5000. It had just over 250,000 miles. With a 5 digit odometer, you couldn't tell if it was 51,000, 151,000, or 251,000 though. And that interior still looked like new! BTW, I later found out my mechanic bought it from the insurance company to put it back on the road. Could be still clacking around. Why did I buy it for my first sedan? I walked into a Volvo/Mercedes dealership and announced "I want a durable, reliable, economical car." Answer "You want a diesel."

DO you think this new CDI is a worthy successor to the venerable 220,240, or 300D for example?

The CDI is just a magnificant car. I really don't like the new interior, though, which is decidedly non-German. If I wanted a Lexus, I would have bought a Lexus. My '93 has held up as well as my '71, so I can only expect the same for the CDI. Personally, I'm glad to have the cast iron straight 6 over the coming V-6 aluminum. I sure miss the simplicity of the 220D, though. Not looking forward to spending $2500 on the first computer system to go out.
What I miss in the 220D? Stick shift, that gorgeous navy dashboard to match the dark blue exterior. The quality and beauty of the parchment 1971 version of the MB-Tex seats that withstood years of scrubbing, even Ajaxing. And that baked on enamel finish of the non-metallic paints.
What don't I miss? A glove box full of fuel filters and prefilters should you need to change them out on the road. Not having to roll down the windows and turn the heater on full blast in order to bring down the engine temp on a summer trip through the Rockies.

Curious, how fast he opens it up on the Autobahn? Can it do 200km/h?

I felt the need to post this. Why not?
Remember that 350SDL I shot last time? Here it is again.
350SDL 80 mph to 113 mph.

1997 E300d (w210)
Driving a 1997 E300D (W210) .. Bought it used in June 2004 and really like it, but I'm experiencing a rather persistent "shifting" problem, the solution for which seems to elude both my MB certified independent mechanic and the dealership (NOTE: we have already explored the tx fluid wicking into the ECU via the wire insulation, among other things) .. There are no "error codes" and no "alerts" on the instrument panel - Everything checks out as "normal".
All feedback is welcome! Here's what's happening.
1. This problem manifests right after stopping at a STOP sign in the neighborhood (sometimes a complete stop, sometimes not) when driving the car for the first time on any given day.
2. The car initially starts shifting normally as I approach the STOP sign - but when I attempt to accelerate again after the STOP sign it does one of the following:
a) Suddenly the transmission appears to be in a higher gear (e.g. 4th) as if instead of completing the downshift it somehow got confused and upshifted .. As I depress the gas pedal to accelerate, the car barely "limps" along until I pull over and stop/restart the car, afterwhich it shifts normally again.
b) Or, suddenly the the transmission is in Neutral even though the shift stick is still in "D"rive - Once again, I stop/restart the car and it shifts normally again.
c) Or, at times it performs normally, no problem at all.

Sounds like a governor pressure switch and solenoid in the valve body. I'm not even 100% sure that MB trannys are equipped with such, but those are the symptoms of a bad one.

Mercedes E 220 CDI 2000
At my home, we all have diesel's. You can see all our diesel's in my sig. The Mercedes is mine, the others are from my parents and my brothers. In this moment we didn't have any petrol engine car.
The Opel Astra (a small sized car like a VW Golf) 1.7 lt diesel engine is made by Isuzu for Opel and the BMW Mini diesel engine is made by Toyota for the Mini.
