Hard to start - at 60* ambient temp?

I just had the wiring harness done on my 95 E300D, the one going to the glow plugs, I also replaced the glow plugs and glow plug relay. Now yesterday afternoon here in California at 2:00 pm it was 60* ambient temp and the car will hardly hang on upon start-up. It stalled after cranking the first two times, on the third try turning it over it caught but was idling very low, then it slowly warmed and was okay, it then drives okay the rest of the day - my question is this, should this car be that hard to start the in light of the new plugs & relay?

Hard Starting

Absolutely not. Take it to someone who can do a proper diagnosis. Is your fuel clean? No water? Check your fuel filters. You might have to pony up and have a dealer do a diagnosis.

Is it loosing compression, maybe a blow ring? How many miles are on the engine?

Only 118K on the engine. Maybe this sounds crazy but after I changed the oil (have no idea how long the oil was in there from previous owner) the car started up fine...

Old oil, especially if it's not Synth... can break down greatly, and this could lead to loss of compression... which would explain it.
