I am flirting with the idea of an older diesel as a daily drive...

Provided the previous owners took very good care of the cars, I'd say they're fine, though I'm a bit wary of the 62K mile statement on that 190. Get a carfax done on both, as well as pre purchase inspections on both at a qualified MB repair shop. They're both fine cars, the 87' 300TD is rare too, that's the last year they offered a diesel wagon in the US.

things with and without wheels
Diesels can last many miles more then any gasoline engine and they are more efficient, they do not like cold temperatures when starting it up.If the fuel system doesnt get contaminated by water or dirt and you use good quality fuel you'll be fine . Older diesels are noisier then the new stuff that is on the market now.Diesel fuel is readly available at most gas stations unlike 10 -20 years ago.
