DaimlerChrysler: Diesel good for America

DaimlerChrysler says USA should go diesel

Mon 11 Sep, 2006, 16:49

DaimlerChrysler has said that diesel must play a big part in solving the fuel crisis in the USA.
Loren Beard, Senior Manager - Fuels for DaimlerChrysler, said that, "Diesel will be good for America, and biodiesel makes diesel better." He said that diesel engines provide 30% better fuel economy and 20% less CO2 emissions. He also pointed out that biodiesel would use 20% plant based fuel that had been grown in the USA, not imported from the Middle East.

According to the American government's own figures, if diesel had a 33% share of cars and pick-ups, the U.S. would reduce its oil consumption by up to 1.4 million barrels of oil per day. That would mean it could stop importing oil from Saudi Arabia altogether.

Biodiesel or even SVO is cleaner and easier to produce than Ethanol by leaps and bounds. It's time to work toward solutions for today's problems rationally and scientifically.

This is great, but when is MB going to allow us to put B20 into our cars without threatening to void the warranty?

I'd assume as soon as there's a national B20 standard which is being worked out right now. Right now MBUSA approves B5, a step in the right direction.

At the end of the day you don't loose all your power and performance going diesel. You do the whole planet a favour and leave some fuel for your children.

The only problem with biodiesel is that the global supply wouldn't service the needs of Los Angleles. Vegetative production of Palm Oil is a serious problem for demand and looking at used oils and "fillers" made from combination sources (mixtures of oils) may well do the trick.

If I was into speculation I would certainly be looking at Australian and Latino wastelands as future farms.

Mercedes should "seed" 500 test cars into North America as cases for operational proof. This would give feedback on demographic suitability and give facts and figures to consumers.

In England, McD's used cooking oil sells for more than diesel. I think you can safely assume that demand for BD will cause your humble bar of soap to cost more. I find that slightly amusing .... we clean up vehicle emissions only to make washing more expensive.

?? Please explain this. A by product of producing bio-diesel is the production of (glycerine?) soap. You end up with unwanted soap, not consume it, when you make bio-diesel.

I liked bio-diesel back when it was an unknown novelty that a tinkerer could make in their garage. Now, like someone pointed out, the veggy oil will quickly be sopped up by the commerical enterprises or the government.
