Same thing happens here in DFW. The truck stops (as opposed to non-truck-stop stations) tend to change the selling price of diesel more quickly in response to changes in crude oil prices (but still not as rapidly as gasoline price fluctuations.) At the moment, the truck stops around here generally the the best diesel price -- in the nieghborhood of $2.24 - $2.35 / gal. Those non-truck-stop stations that have diesel typically want at least $2.60 / gal for it.

I guess this means that if you're not a truck stop, you're not selling much diesel regardless of its price, and you really do not want to compete with the big operatons.

That's about what it is here in Georgia, too. However, cross into Florida, and the price for all fuels jumps $.20/gal.

Down to $1.97 here for 87 gas

Diesel still hanging around 2.50

Really sucks, not because I drive a CDI, but because I operate a roll-off dumpster biz, 4-5 mpg trucks running up to 200 miles/day!

Can't really pass cost along, customer will go elsewhere.

I think a lot of the problem in the Northeast and norther Midwest is the increased usage of heating oil; and this comes out of the refinery at pretty much the same place as diesel fuel. Warmer weather has reduced the demand for heating oil, so the price for diesel hasn't gone up (and in fact went down in many places) as much as it could have.

Shop the truck stops. They are almost always cheaper; and Flying J has a Frequent Fueler Discount Program.

Price of Diesel

Wow, Chicago is $3.17?? You need to drive down to St Louis to fuel up. I don't pay any attention to gas prices, because most of our driving is in our two old diesels, but diesel at the Shell station just around the corner is $2.359and we live downtown - out on the freeway at the truck stops its only 2 or 3 cents cheaper.

My understanding is that diesel prices are more closely tied to trucking and railway usage/demand. I am friends with a retired oil and gas CEO and he told me that diesel prices are almost a barometer for how the economy is doing. When shipping traffic is up(booming economy) diesel prices will be up and in an economic downturn they will be down. Gasoline demand/usage is more constant.

Diesel prices

Here's an update on diesel in St Louis. The Shell station near downtown dropped the price this morning from $2.359 to $2.295

Why do people think the transmission on the 07 is an advantage? The change in the tranny is one of the reasons I wanted an 06 over an 07.

Your are very fortunate to be living on your side of the pond. ULSD is currently running at almost $8 for an English gallon!

Construction in foreign markets is increasing(China, Japan) so world price of diesel goes up.

Very simple answer, diesel is relatively much less elastic than gasoline, this is 10000x more so in the US. Those who use diesel (commercial, construction, shipping) cannot respond to price changes while the private consumer can.
