Question Glow plug replacement torque

Just finished replacing all 6 on my 99 E300td, cleaned out the chambers with a gun brush and was amazed at the carbon that came out with the siphon gun. Blew all back through the intakes, shop-vac'd everything and we're back in business.. BTW: the 3/8 impact gun at low power was THE answer!

BUT.. any recommendations on the torque specs? Bottom-out and 1/4 turn or 12-15 ft/lb like a spark plug in an alu. head?

You guys have been a tremendous aid so far, we'll try to post some pics later of the job. Not bad for the average mechanicaly inclined person with a few common tools. Full write up to come if there is interest.

I cannot help you on this but would love to see some photos of the carbon that came out of the chambers. Is this method of cleaning recommended by MB? Please post lots of photos.

I have cleaned a lot of carbon out when replacing glow plugs, although from what I remember there is a special reaming tool that will get all the carbon out. I hope the gun brush will too, although the reaming tool seems to be a bit better suited for removing the carbon.

You might want to use some antiseize on the threads and shaft of the GP too. Most DIYer's use it when they replace them. I dont thnk MB has ever come out and recommended it.

Beru makes a special grease they recommend for their GP's as well.

Cool glow plug torque

Thank you for the info. upon default I torqued to 150 in.lb.. so feel OK about that. Anti-seized the threads, reset the OBD2, and no check engine light,
I still have a bit of a one cylindered miss at cold start,?? Was their a opportunity when all the GP's were out to do a compression check? I suspect so,
and do any of you know the compression, my gauge tops out at 300#.Will probably be back in this weekend to meter the GP's again, and see if not reaming has shorted one out.

Did you use the impact wrench on low to remove the GP's?

Inpact gun?? YES ("3/8")

Started out very cautious but soon felt comfortable at full flow, (125#) at regulator. Using my left hand on a 8" extension to modify the initial shock. As movement was observed, reversing and reversing oiling[(KANO-KROIL) or PB blaster or similar lubricant]. and yes every one came out, confidence builder with every one. 3/4 length socket works extremely well, It rides the glow plug out, were a common deep well socket allows the glow plug to ride out, with in the socket and damaging the threads on the GP on the way.
