Overheating OM617
Okay guys, on a 30 mile trip, the temp goes to red. We turned the heater on, and opened the sunroof. It was 40 degrees out. When I got home, I found that I had lost an entire overflow bin of coolant! I have no know leaks, and my grandfather said it sounds like it is burning it. Any ideas?? I almost want to cry. After all I have put into it, and the possibility of something wrong with the motor??!!?

Not a lot of dieselheads on here.
What have you done to the cooling system/engine lately? Sounds like your headgasket might have failed. What color is the smoke coming out the tailpipe? Black or white?

I have done nothing to the coolant system, but replace the fan guard. I only get a tiny little bit of blue smoke until the car is warmed up, then no smoke at all.

Yeah, I was there, but they banned me partly because of my faith, and because when my little brother joined, they thought I had made another account. The people there are jerks, from my experience. I mean, there are a coupe nice ones, who are Christians. But the others, cuss at you, tease you, pick on you, and call you dirty words when you get banned.
Good luck with the 300 in the meantime.

I had this happen on mine a few years back and it was a coolant leak that only exposed itself when under pressure. I was able to see the actual leak though since it left a stain and was on the radiator overflow hose of all places.
I'd start with simple things though like verify the water pump is working. Make sure the t-stat is not stuck.

Out Of Control!!
Like was indicated the only good way to determine a system or head gasket leak is to have the cooling system pressure tested. Good Luck!!

UPDATE
Okay, coolant system would not even make pressure. Just poured coolant into the cylinder(s). Have removed the valve cover, and are going to adjust valves before we retry compression test. Valves are all WAY to tight and compression was VERY low. I'll keep you guys updated!
