DEF pricing
I have been buying this at Sam's Club for the Company trucks. 2.5 gallon container is $10.88. This in Mn. Sounds slightly cheaper than some of the other sources.

Is the dealer actually charging that much of a markup or are they charging an absurd labor fee like they do for any labor? I never have had them do DEF before so not seen how the receipt for the "work" looks like. I once paid a Ford dealer something like $85 to change out a burnt tail light bulb, that was $83 in labor(1 hour rate) and $2 part .... I was an idiot to not ask ahead of time.
With that said I think simply getting it from any auto parts store is a cheap enough route for me. I would be curious if the pump nozzles for DEF at a truck stop fit right into my 2013 ML. But as of yet just never been around a truck stop in it to find out for myself. I am assuming it does not fit though.

I asked for a quote to change the fuel filter in my '06 CDI. $199 they tell because it is"very difficult"!
Bought oem filter online $23+. No tax, free shipping. Very basic tools & skills required.
Cheers,
Regarding DEF, everybody except the truck plazas are gouging on the price...

I typically buy 2.5gallons for $12-13. Thought of buying a 5 gallon new gas tank and home depot and filling it up at the truck stops but not really worth it right now.
I got lucky last week I think, took the GL350 in for Service A at the dealer, told him to skip the AdBlue but he quoted my $186 all in with DEF, Tax etc. etc. which I didn't think was too bad....

I told the service advisor that he should wear a black mask when suggesting that.

Mikemargolis, I just checked your ave MPG. Do you do a lot of city driving? We're in a rural area and drive mostly on twisty, hilly, two lane roads. I don't baby the car and my wife has a heavy foot, yet our dash computer says that we've averaged 35.5 MPG over the last 20,000 + miles.

I reset my dashboard at every oil change, and right now, with about 5000 miles in, it's showing 34.4.
That dashboard computer is notoriously inaccurate.
Try fuelly, my friend. Or at least write down half a dozen tanks and gallons and do the math. You won't be anywhere near 35.5 if you've got an E-350 diesel like mine.

My E350 overstates about the same as your Mike, will show 35-36 per tank but usually get 30-33 calculated at the pump....

I have found that AdBlue is consumed the most during city driving. Very little is burned on the highway. During my past 10k miles, I only used about 1.5 gallons of DEF. I do a lot of highway driving.

I'm really curious about filling my DEF at a truck stop at one of their dispensers. Has anyone here ever tried it?
I know I can get the 2 1/2 gal jugs at any auto store, and get the small special bottles at one of the dealers (MB, VW, BMW) with a special no spill twist spout.
I'd think we could just fill up the DEF at a Flying J Truck Stop, next to the Diesel Pumps?

Forget about it. Went to my local auto store and bought a box of 2.5g DEF and 2 X 1 Gal bottles. The 2.5g box comes with a really handy flexible spout.
Just opened the fill cap, inserted the nozzle and poured in the full 2.5 gallons of DEF. No idea how much I'd need so tried to add one more gallon. It quicklt overflowed so I stopped, spilled a bit about the side and wheel. Just wiped it off with a paper towel.
So about 2.6gallons in 7k miles. I think the DEF tank holds about 6 gals.
I paid $14.99 for the 2.5 gal bottle and $6.99 for the 1 gallon. So $15.00 bucks for what the dealer charges about $200.

The DEF tank's capacity is 8.2 gal. My GL 350 used 2.5 gal over 6600 miles of mixed highway/ town driving. Very easy to fill with 0.5 gal MB fill container and refilled with Wallmart 2.5 gal tanks.

Local Bucees gas stations in Central Texas charged $2.39/gallon...my Sprinter held more than I expected but like others have said very little is used in highway driving which is 90% of that Van's life.
