Check Engine (Maybe P1402)
Started a new thread because I did not want to hijack the other
My GL320 cranked a LONG time yesterday. It was the first start after sitting outside in sub zero weather for about a week.
I thought it was not going to start, but it did, then it ran about a minute, and stalled on eth way out of the neighborhood.
It started back up and showed a check engine light and was in limp-mode. I ran it till it came up to temp (driving gently) and the upon restart all was fine except the "Check-Engine" light. I don't have a DAS, but will pull whatever codes are stored with my OBD/CAN reader.
If it is P1402 and related to the long crank (and low/cold battery) will it reset itself after a number of good starts, or do I need to clear it?
That code relates to the Diferential Pressure Sensor in the DPF. Usually triggers when you have to crank several times in freezing weather, or a lot of stat stop driving in very cold temps, and your battery is weak.
Nothing to do with the EGR. The code is just a generic code used by OBDII and means several things to different manufactures. The actual codes are proprietary and requires MB Star Diagnosis software to get the true issue.

I will next time I go out.
(I have not driven it since I got back)
If I was 'usually' parking it outside, and/or if it 'usually' got down below zero for multiple days in a row here, I would.
This has been an unusual week in both regards.
If I ever do the radiator hoses or radiator, it might get a heater just for the hell of it.

OK, finally got a chance to put my ODB/CAN reader on it.
I have driven it about 3 times since the problem. It is now back in the garage, and I have zero starting or limp issues, but the CEL is still on.
One note I read said that many emission codes will reset after 4 cold start/full warm up cycles if there is not a hard fault, so I figured, why not wait and see.
So the code is P1402 (EGR) and P0087 (Low fuel rail pressure).
Doing some googling, both seem somewhat common on CDIs when it is VERY cold (and maybe a low battery.)
My battery is good, but it cranked so long, it was certainly pulling it way down.
I have a drive to the airport tomorrow and a drive home on Friday. If it does not self reset, I will clear them and see if they come back.

Just had this problem on a 2007 R320 CDI. Ended up replacing the DPF sensor.
If anyone else has this problem here is a good DIY.

I have had the problem once or twice a year, only in cold wet weather, but luckily not in teh last year or so.
Last weekend, my car went into limp mode, and this time returned to limp mode after every start (All hot starts).
I figured teh part (now down to $25 to $30 from the old $75 to $90 price) was cheaper then taking the car in for any kind of diagnostics.
SO, today the part should show up, but will probably not get a chance to install it for about a week or so due to traveling.
Hopefully that fixes the issue, if not it will be of to my local Indy shop to see what they can find.
