2009 ML320 Bluetec - what could go wrong

Even though I love my old Saab (it has a ton of character), I find myself in need of a bigger vehicle. Both the trunk size and the towing capacity got me to the MLs.
I saw a nice example on the local used cars dealer's lot - 2009 ML320 Bluetec, nice black color, hitch installed, everything seems to work... and the price seems reasonable - $21900. Unfortunately, DW thinks it is a bit over the budget, since she saw some ML350 gasoline for about $16K, a year or so older. Plus, the only friend we have that is a MB user (he went from ML350 to S600, S65AMG, E63AMG if I remember correctly) insists that these are expensive to maintain cars, most Indy shops do not know what are they doing, and I should get a nice financing on a CPO with extended warranty and have a peace of mind. Plus, he dislikes diesels
As I just got out of the mortgage and generally am not a fan of the consumer credits,

Any words of caution and/or advice are greatly appreciated.

So,
If I get a gasser, I will get just the suspension, El. gremlins, and issues with the steering (that is what a fast search on the net says), minus the diesel issues?
And, since the gasoline engine is quite sophisticated too, compared to Chevy big-block... I will have to marry the dealer anyway...
I do realize that nobody could help me if I do not know what I want.

Yes, I do not have any experience working on the diesels. However, this new one, arguably, is different enough form the old and the level of complexity is up the same way if you compare it to the 2002 gasoline I've got now. I can not say I have a lot of experience working on it though, because nothing has stopped working on it.
So, Should I expect to drop another $5K and then I will have a nice working car with a great mileage and amazing torque? (The car is 2009, around 70 000 on it, for about $20K). Or, is it about $5K per every 10-20 000 miles?

The extended warranty will cost me at least $15K more, payable now.

From my general culture knowledge,
extended warranties should keep the customers reasonably happy while still being profitable for the company.

Not to spook you away, as you may have a great MB Bluetec experience, but I feel obligated to caution you and make you aware of my current troubling MB experience:
