DIY OM642 thermostat replacement
Sorry about cross posting this question, but I forgot about the separate diesel forum. My ‘07 E320 bluetec is constantly running cold, no engine codes yet, but I think it may be time to replace the thermostat. Are there any guides, or even better, videos walking through this?

Shout out to Konigstiger for answering this. Link to my question in the W211 forum:

Actually looks straight forward, very unMercedes like.

Do you really have a thermostat?
From what I saw on my 08 BT it is electro-valve controlled by computer.

Not sure but it’s listed as a thermostat. The Wahler unit I got runs about for about $150, the MB unit is over $200. From my limited research the “thermostat” does have some sort of heater in it to help the engine heat up faster I presume, diesels don’t like the cold.

Diesels have option for cabin electric heater, so I think the description is mistaking valve magnetic coil for heater? Lot of WIS have very strange names that come from "lost translation" . Typical is "pilot bushing" on 5sp or 606 have so-called fuel thermostat, what is fuel heater.
Point is that if it is electro-valve, your problem is more likely in controls, not in the valve.

Stupid iPad, posts disappear into the ether.
All I know is that the part is listed as a thermostat in multiple locations, be that as it may you are correct in stating that if there is a electro-mechanical valve there could be an issue with the controller. However, whether a control issue more likely than a bad valve on a 10+ year old car with 160k+ miles on it is debatable. Haven't installed the part yet, I will update this thread when the problem has been resolved.
