2006 E320CDI No start TONS of smoke and low fuel pressure code

I bought a car that doesn't start. Not smart, I know. It cranks great. Has a code saying low fuel pressure. So I had a new fuel pump installed along with fuel regulator, fuel filter, and sending unit. Still low pressure. So finally got it to temporarily start with starting fluid and another time with propane. Crazy amount of smoke billowing out from pipes, hood, everywhere. Someone said try fuel injection pump. Has anyone heard or seen this before? Please help !

What did you get that code from.

Is the lift pump working?

Have you measured the fuel pump at the low pressure side?

The CDI wont even open injectors if the rail pressure is too low so that would be what you need to concentrate on.

Common rail doesn't have injection pump.
You run the engine on garbage and wonder why it smokes???
As Alex said focus on getting the rail pressure. I would not trust the sensor and try to hook up mechanical gauge.

There's a mechanically driven high pressure fuel pump mounted on the front of the engine.

BTW, starting fluid is an excellent way to blow up a diesel engine.

I found diesel-rated starting fluid and used it on Detroit engine that would not prime fuel after filter change, but you have to be very careful with those things.
