2006 cdi, 156k
About a month ago, I had my indie change (flush) the antifreeze and install a new coolant recovery tank, as well perform its bi-annual brake flush, change out the glow plugs since one was bad (they had 100k on them), and weld the exhaust hanger bracket (this was making a buzzing sound at certain rpm's).

Two weeks later I noticed the check coolant light come on. I thought maybe it just needed a topping off. I added some fluid and a couple of days later the light returned and I noticed anti-freeze on the ground. Long story short, the water pump gave out. I assume the fresh anti-freeze found the weakest link and went for it. My indie showed me the water pump and pulley's. The pulley's and water pump all had a lot of bearing noise and the water pump had play in it. I also had my indie change the upper radiator hose. I believe the new water pump is a Graf.

I pumped a lot of money in my cdi in these two services ($1500), but it sure beats having to make car payments. Once my cdi hit 100k, the water pump was always in the back of my mind on failing, so in a way, I am glad it was replaced and happened while i was close to home.

Thank you for mentioning. I have been curious about the water pump. This is the first time I have seen mention of it. Most vehicles I have changed preventively. I have 166k on an 08gl cdi. I have changed fluid twice I think. Next time I’ll probably change. I have also changed the belt a few times.
