P2002 code (2015 GLK250)

Well, the check engine light came on today. Car seems to be driving normal. I took it right to the dealer but they are backed up and said if no driving issues, keep going until the appointment next week.

i scanned the car and came back with a P2002 code. A search turned up DPF efficiency below threshold. Vehicle is still under extended warranty with 47k.

Any thoughts or comments?

Yep, your warranty, their problem at this point. Not shocking, just try to keep on good terms with service folks at dealership, a case of beers or Red Bull’s can go a LONG way. Trust me...as the recipient of such a gift last week.

Does anyone know if the P2002 code results in an increased consumption of DEF or regen cycles?

Thanks

If you need new DPF - that is only warranty problem money-wise.
My local dealer could not get new/rebuild DPF at all. I placed internet order for rebuild (only option) DPF 60 days ago on June 1.
Last news is that in 8 days DPF will leave Germany. The car is sitting brick for 2 months and counting as finally clog DPF put it in limp mode.
I was monitoring the car with TorquePro when I had codes coming. The only indication about starting regeneration was higher DPF temperature and seems it tried to do it on every morning restart.
Surprisingly we drove with popping codes for over 5000 miles and mpg was great.
Keep us posted how the warranty will deal with it. ?

Thanks for the info. My one complaint about MB diesel is the lack of driver alerts for regen or EGT/DPF temp. My F250 would at least flash a warning, but I installed a scan gauge II programed to provide indication. I may do the same for the GLK. I don’t like to interrupt regen cycles since it can dilute oil with fuel or run EGT’s high among other problems. Shutting down suddenly with high EGT’s can lead to bearing failure in the turbo. We may park the GLk until the appointment and the issue is resolved, especially it it is entering regen every time we start the vehicle.

thanks again

My 2017 F350 doesn't have any indication when regeneration happens neither. I drove it for 16 k miles and under good load most of the time (6000 lb camper) and only once I catch mpg dropping drastically, what had to be regeneration.
On E250 BT others report higher idle and different engine sound during regeneration. That is not happening on my car. Occasionally I can only smell funny fumes.
I guess the system is design to handle stopped regenerations as even pushing the pedal to the metal aborts it, but then spending hefty $$$ on new DPF every few years is not making for cheap maintenance, on top of long wait for the part.
My newest iCarsoft scanner shows the DPF content status, but I have yet to verify how truthful it is.
EDIT, writing above gave me idea about dusting-off my Scangauge. Turns out it has DPF regeneration status available for new Ford. Will have to check it.

The newer fords (6.7) also offer a soot load indication so you can predict the Regen cycles a little better. Contact scan guage and they can program the unit for you or give you the commands to enter manually. Alternatively, you can buy a newer digital guage from Banks or other that monitors / displays these memory locations.

I am fanatical about ensuring regens are completed and monitoring temps on the 6.4. I haven’t had any issues after 98k with the vehicle aside from regular maintenance and a couple bad bearings. I think just being aware of the nuances with modern diesel emissions systems is a contributing factor. Diesel, gasoline and even hybrid technology are all different enough to require some considerations during operation and maintenance, I think the technology would be more successful in the marketplace if they communicated and educated owners/operators. Some manufacturers have done so with hybrid tech, but that was due to the company’s investment and management’s commitment to the technology, thus they educated and communicated, prompting the changes in culture required to make hybrid successful. I never saw that with current generation diesel emissions systems.

time to get off my soap box

No matter. The code should be still there, but not active or pending.

So the car went in for the check engine light and our A3 (48k) service. The dealer said they suspect the CEL was caused by the engine air filter and it was due for replacement anyways. So it has been replaced and we will drive the car and see.

If they did not present you with code number, that means they BS you.
How much the filter cost you?

No code number and they were unclear with the code description. I told them I scanned and pulled the code, and told them what I knew of the code. The service rep didn’t have much to say after that. Yes, I suspect this may be BS and the CEL will likely return.

The air filter was $68.40.

Incredible....

Kajitek, do you have emissions testing in Vegas? If not, bring it to Malone Tuning and have 'em do a DPF/EGR/DEF bypass and be done with it. Micah says that there's also an increase in power. I'm guessing due to the lack of restriction caused by the DPF, mebbe even the fuel delivery dilution caused by the EGR.

NV does have smog test but it totally different from California.
When in California they plug OBD and check for EGR, cats removal (with limited knowledge what they are looking for) they never put gas probe.
In Nevada on other hand they don't plug OBD and only put probe doing test or rolls.
My car passed the test not being ready since they did not scan it.
Question is would the engine with deleted emission stuff still pass emission test?
My 250 Bluetec passed the test having 3% of allowables and that still with malfunctioning DPF.
But at this point I already spend $2700 on new DPF, so should be good for another 80k miles.

It’s back.......

The wife said the check engine light came back on driving home from work today. I can only assume it is the same code, I haven’t checked it myself.

I’ll call the dealer in the morning.

Update

So my wife took the GLk to the dealer and they told her it was the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and it may be a week before the part arrives.

Glad the vehicle is still under warranty. I know those aren’t cheap.
