I might own a test w123

So i bought an 82 240d all the Manuels are in German and there is no side mirror, but knowing early 80s mercedes were often imported for lower prices it means nothing until I try to get a carfax and my vin doesn't read, i had already knew it was strange vin being wdb123123123.... And then some other numbers, but after trying to sell it and the website blocking the car I look up the other 240d and my vin isso strange conpared to other 240d that are for sale that i have to concluded that it was a test car sold for a cheap price before being imported in 1985, skip ahead to 2012 were a collage kid buys it for 500 and then another skip to 2014 were it was brought to texas before finding its away to a field in south Texas where I bought it for 500. Where today it is being restored slightly. Does anyone have any information that would prove or disprove this theory this car perplexed me and I want to find out its history

Yellow was the factory color but someone painted it with bedliner

1922 Ford Model T / no OBD
Looks like in good shape, where headlights door on W123 don't last under the sun.
The 40+ years records on car are going to be hard to find. Bare in mind - Carfax come to life less than 20 years ago.
Talking about imports, back in 1980's economy was quite different. I've been in Germany in 1986 and brand new MB on Frankfurt main street window was $10k. At the same time cheapest models in US started at $26k, so lot of them have been imported by owners, even the conversion to DOT requirements average $5,000.
Pull paneling on the door and see if the car has added reinforcement.
European models had different tail lights.

Could be a crash test car, emissions test car or other manufacturers plate type machine. Rules about those for after testing sale were not too specific 35 years ago.

I was out in Northern California recently for work (WSBK Laguna) and as usual was searching Craigslist for deals back at hotel. Found several crash test cars for California compliance testing, all said they could never be titled and all were pretty messed up but great for parts.
