2012 GL350 Engine Noise - not timing chain

HELP NEEDED

I've tried to read through as many different threads as possible before posting.

I have a 2012 Mercedes GL350 with roughly 56,000 miles on it. The vehicle was making it's usual diesel noise (we also have a 2005 Sprinter 2500). It was also making this intermittent slap noise, and after some research we figured it was the timing chain - which we just replaced it but we still have the intermittent slap noise.

Points are:
On further investigation, the noise sounds like it's coming from the back of the engine

I've included a sound clip
It's not rhythmic - for example, it does not have a consistent knock sound
The noise only appears when in "Park" - once in gear noise goes away
Unbolted converter, and moved away from engine - noise still occurs

Our thoughts:
Flexplate

Sounds to irregular to be timing chain, neither crank speed (rods) nor 1/2 crank speed (valve train)...just a tiny observation based on tiny sound clip. Was tranny removed in recent past?

Did you check if that is combustion noise? Observe tailpipe for pufs?
If not, that might be loose bolt or chunk of dirt at flywheel.

Try to pin point the exact location of the noise with a piece of garden hose and scope with it different parts while the motor is running

A lot of phone apps allow for recording frequencies and amplitudes of sounds, this can be used to determine rpm....or set belt tensions, lots of uses really
