Valvoline MST oil is not approved for 229.51 spec anymore
Heads up for everyone who uses Valvoline MST oil for diesel engines.
Valvoline slightly changed the formula in their oil and this oil doesn't meet 229.31 and 229.51 specs anymore.
The oil has same part number and barcode, however bottle with new formula has new label (see photo below) and 229.31 and 229.51 specs are NOT listed as approved.
I called Valvoline and they confirmed, they don't have approval from MB for new formula for 229.31 and 229.51 specs yet, but the oil is approved for 229.3 and 229.5.
Valvoline MST 5W-40 was my go-to oil, now I'm looking for replacement. Any suggestions? I prefer 5W-40.
I prefer 229.52 category oils and Motul 8100 X-clean EFEEngine Oil was easy available lately. it is 30 weight and seems 40 weight oils don't make the approval.
The main reason I tuned the engine to get rid of the dpf on my 08 320cdi. I run liqui moly liechlauf high tech 5w40. My oil has tested well. I am about to turn 200k. I feel the engine will hold up forever. Wish I felt the same about the rest of the truck. Honestly I probably drive it a bit too aggressively also. 😬
