Anyone heard of VGT vane mechanism sticking (not an actuator problem) -

The mechanical connection from the actuator inside the turbo that actually manipulates the vane on my E320 bluetec is incredibly stiff. I've used two different actuators, and they both can move it, but are much too slow to keep up with regular driving. Manually manipulating it by hand is very difficult, whereas another identical OM642 without the issue allows me to manually manipulate the vane very easily. It takes a lot of force on my bluetec.. so I'm trying to figure out my options:
  • Option 1 : Replace the entire turbo assembly - would certainly prefer not to
  • Option 2: Pull the turbo and see if there's any repairs I can potentially make. I haven't pulled it yet, so I'm trying to get input as to what might be causing the stiffness:
    • Gunked up possibly? Can it just be cleaned?
    • Some sort of mechanical failure, broken gear or piece inside?

Has anyone dealt with something similar? Car has 135K on it and is a W211 2007 OM642

So it turned out to be the vanes were actually rubbing against the housing. They must have somehow become bent or misaligned over the 135K miles on the car. Not gunked up like I suspected. The turbo housing has been machined ever so slightly and they are free moving again. How odd.
