Hi, I have a metal ring (at 12 o'clock) that was in the air filter box for a 2009 e320 bluetec (both right and left boxes). It shown in the attached picture.
It is a support for the air filter or goes into the air duct? Where does it attached?

I remember running into this on mine.. I speculate it's a support spring of sorts for one of the intake tubes. I threw it out. No problems 70k miles later.
If you want I can check the EPC tomorrow and see if I can pinpoint what exactly it is.
