how to remove steering lock in 1984 300D

My new purchase has a slightly sticky key operation. I have read the posts on the necessity of cleaning and lubrication of the component. What I would like to do after lubing is to remove the steering lock. The theft prevention rod to the column and its spring lock adds resistance and complexity and almost certainly adds wear to the key assembly. I would like to remove it. Haynes says how to remove the assembly. It would seem that cutting off that side with the rod would remove a clamping surface. Ideas out there? I want to make sure the key doesn't move the rod.

I don't want to cut anything until I can gaze upon the anatomy of the beast!Being a Wyoming libertarian I don't see the necessity of anti theft devices like steering locks mandated.. I can accept safety devices but if you live among theves....MOVE.
